"Happy" Christmas and "Merry" New Year

We always wish “Merry” Christmas to our friends and family. But we never ever wish “Merry” Diwali, ID, Gurpurab, or Holi and limit ourselves to “Happy” when we wish others on these occasions. So why the difference ? The word “Merry” usually conveys a feeling of joyousness, cheerfulness, and delivers a sense of joviality or sometimes even carries connotations of  boisterousness or even drunkenness. “Happy” on the other hand while positive appears formal and subdued in comparison.
If it is the wine which is the reason “Merry” is linked specially to Christmas, then how do you wish “Merry” Christmas in Bihar or Gujrat for that matter. And are the Bhaang Pakoras on Holi any less intoxicating than the wine at Christmas making the imbiber any less boisterous. Maybe I should in future wish my teetotaler friends "Happy" birthdays and Anniversaries while to the remaining 99 percent  "Merry" Birthday / Anniversary.

So Seasons greetings to all my friends. May you all be Happy and Merry   the year round.
