linux-logoEnable GTALK from Gaim in Linux

By Synapse

Gaim is what you probably use if you use Linux and want to connect to Yahoo or MSN. Lately google talk has been steadily becoming popular among people. Not many know that you can use Gaim to connect to the google talk servers and chat with your gtalk friends! Here's how you go about it -

1.Click Accounts > Add (At the main login screen)
2.From the protocol dropdown select Jabber
3.Your screen name will be your gmail address except @gmail.com Example: If your address is x...@gmail.com then your screen name will be xyz
4.Change the server from jabber.org to gmail.com
5.Password will be the same password that you use for Gmail
6.Click show more options
7."Use TLS is available" should be checked
8.The connect server should be "talk.google.com"

Gaim is now known as Pidgin and is available by default in many of the newer distros(ubuntu 7.10 and all). If you are using pidgin, you need not go through steps 3-8 listen above. Instead from the protocol dropdown simply select  "Google talk".

KDE guy can use the excellent kopete messenger. For video chat i recommend skype or using Yahoo Messenger Video over kopete.

Hey please tell me which all programs can i use to make Video Conferencing and Voice chat over the msn, yahoo and Google Talk.
As of now i use skype for Voice and my cam is not working. I tried ekiga to google talk but it was not clear, was full of noise and breaks.
So it would be nice not to tunnel :D
Please write a list in our alternatives list, so that it can be used for future also.

Ubuntu Hardy repositories have Mozilla Prism Google Talk web app. Prism versions of a lot of Google apps are available.

I got the info from here

I guess you can use Jabbin for voice chatting with other google talk users. I think its voice clarity will be a tad better as there is no tunneling involved

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jabbin/

I downloaded the deb of jabbin from its sourceforge page. It has a dependency issue with libssl if you are installing on ubuntu gutsy. Jabbin needs libssl0.9.7 while gutsy has libssl0.9.8. You can work around the problem by downloading libssl0.9.7 deb from any of the mirrors listed in the following page

http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/i386/libssl0.9.7/download

DO NOT uninstall libssl0.9.8. Just install 0.9.7 followed by the jabbin deb. For logging into your gmail ID follow the instructions given here

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/columns/how_to_make_jabber_calls_using_jabbin

Now for my experiences with it. One word.....dissappointment.

I was aable to place a call through to a friend of mine using Google talk on windows, but both of could hear only bangs and crackles. A "Send file" option is there. But when u actually try sending a file it throws up a "Unable to negotiate transfer" error. That makes Jabbin == Pidgin == Kopete(\m/) except for the "call" button maybe.

Whats ur opinion abt Ekiga??

It is possible to use Ekiga to chat with both yahoo and gtalk users. Voice clarity ain't anything to brag about. But from my experiences ekiga was far more clearer than jabbin.  Procedure for making Gtalk calls from ekiga is as follows

First sign up for a free SIP username at http://ekiga.net

Now open ekiga and sign in using your registered username.
If the gmail id of the friend you wish to call is linu...@gmail.com then in the sip address bar of ekiga type in
linu...@gtalk2voip.com

During the first time u call the person at the other end will get an add request from an id that looks kinda like this-> gtalk2...@gmail.com which he/she must accept.

After the user accepts the invitation, he/she can answer your call the next time you call.
