I think we should tell the press about the existence of openstreetmap.org and
how google is inviting community to provide data to improve the quality of
their product. Once this data is handed over to google, it becomes their
property and modifying it is not that easy. ie. the community is going to
provide read only data ( read only for the public ) to google. The
openstreetmap effort [ openstreetmap.org ] exist to provide public read/write
data and can be freely modified. From a practical sense , this makes it more
easier for the public to maintain and the data is public and available to all
to copy and modify and distribute. The Chennai openstreetmap is an example of
community maintained data evolves in quality.

I request people on this list who might be participating in the event to
upload the data to openstreetmap.org and hence provide valuable map data to
the public rather than to a particular company. Google can take the data from
openstreetmap if they want.

Regarding the security concerns, i feel that it is kind of stupid since the
data is available for anyone from satellite image providers for a fee.

I think we should tell the press about this. What about sending the press a
note ?

I am planning to attend the mapping party if it happens.

BTW, let them do their event and let the interested ones participate, after all they are not doing anything illegal.

You are right. I'm quoting few lines from the Google Maps disclaimer here:

"Geocoding data for map content in Google Local is provided
under license by Navteq... and/or Tele Atlas... and subject to
copyright protection and other intellectual property rights owned
by or licensed to NAVTEQ, TANA and/or such other third
parties."
"Also, you may not use Google Local in a manner which
gives you or any other person access to mass downloads or bulk
feeds of numerical latitude and longitude coordinates."

This was pretty thought evoking and we started to experiment with OpenStreetMap.
Let us say: "Our Street ; Our Map! "

Instead of a press note in connection with google event, its better to give a note about openstreetmap in a general sense. Otherwise it will look like the community is bitching and whining.

Yes. After the first OpenStreetMap Mapping Party in NIT-C last Septmber, we collaborated a press release. But it was never shown up in the newspapers. Here is the document. This might add to the press note. https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AT5E_EU-f1GbZGY5dDRtNDJfMTFmZnFzYmRoZw&hl=en

The note's context is the upcoming google event. We should be stressing the importance of openstreetmap and request people to upload the data to openstreetmap.

I am putting up a draft version here : http://www.fosscommunity.in/wiki/OpenstreetMapPressNote

If it is okay, then i can send it to the press today itself.

I think it would be good to do so. We need to tell them that even
mobiles have gps now and they would have to be banned if such mapping
has to be prevented. In fact, it would be virtually impossible to
prevent such mapping.

On the other hand, that could make them more determined to prevent
people from doing any kind of mapping without official sanction. And
that could become counter productive. And we are not really bitching and
whining. We should tell them that the technology freely available today
makes this possible, and the only way to totally prevent it would be to
have a kind of governance that goes against democracy.

For some reason, I am not able to edit the page. I am in Bangalore and
it could be the problem of the network here (it doesn't allow me to
access many pages, including watching Youtube videos). I will try later
also, but just in case I still cannot access the pate, I suggest that
the idea that I had written in an earlier mail also be included in it.

Hi,

I have been following the discussions on openstreetmap.org. If there's
a good write up on openstreetmap.org with a Kerala perspective, we'll
carry the same on Kerala IT News.

We uploaded the Trivandrum Mapping story last saturday.

Anil, thanks for the interest, We appreciate it

All, we should make use of this opportunity to create a collaborative writeup on OpenStreetMap and its applications from
the point of view of a resident keralite. Shall we start an article on Fosscommunities.in wiki ? Since it is a wiki
everyone can add points. Once this article is completed we can give it to Anil .

Well , Mathrubhumi printed the response today. I couldnt find it online so i will send it later when i do find it.
Looks like the current convention in the media is to sensationalize whatever news they get. We had never expressed any
issue with google mapping itself, but with govt. departments involvement in it. The tile of the news was "ഗൂഗിള്‍ മാപ്പിങ്ങ് പാര്‍ട്ടിക്കെതിരെ
സ്വതന്ത്രസോഫ്ട്‌വേര്‍ പ്രസ്ഥാനം" , while we never expressed anything like that.

Quoting form the press note we released ( This doesnt read like anything mathrubhumi published )
