Al Jazeera English ‘Correspondent’ takes a personal journey into Jewish identity in America

 

Doha, 21 November 2013: In the first ever two-part episode of Al Jazeera English’s Correspondent series, Identity and Exile, correspondent Mathew Cassel explores how Judaism and Zionism have become inextricably linked in his own personal life - and whether this is the case across America. It is the first two-part Correspondent series.

 

Matthew was raised Jewish in America, and faced alienation by his family and local Jewish community after protesting in support of Palestinian rights. This personal rejection triggered a journey to understand more about Judaism and Zionism in America. Matthew travels back to his native Chicago and talks to local rabbis, friends and family. He asks them why as Jews, they believe it’s important to maintain support for Israel – at any cost.  He also explores how support for Israel has come to define his own family and community, and talks to other Jewish rabbis, journalists and advocates who are involved in the debate around this issue.

 

Matthew travels back to Palestine to retrace his steps as a university student where, at the time, he was shocked to discover what was being done in the name of Judaism. He also revisits Lebanon to reconnect with and have an honest discussion about his background with the Palestinian refugee family that has treated him as a son through and through.
