ADSL issues?

Hi

(Apologies in advance, this email is going to be technical)

Has anyone else been experiencing ADSL issues over the past few days?

I'm not talking about random slowness (which can be attributed to us
living in Africa) but rather large (>50%) packet loss and overall line
speeds of ~10kbps. (should be 4096kbps)

This is all happening with tests on multiple ISP accounts.

The reason I'm asking Obs is that it seems like the problem is
starting at our local DSLAM.

Hi

I spoke to telkom, the said that there was some work done on our
exchange last week and that a technician would attend to the
problem... and now, a few hours later, my internet is back to normal.

I have been experiencing really bad 'noise' on the telephone which shares the line with the ADSL

Yup – last week my ADSL wasn’t working .. took me 2 days to realise the Telkom line wasn’t working!
Logged a fault and that got sorted, but after that, my outgoing mail just piled up in my outbox … incoming was fine …
have just spent the afternoon on the phone to adsl and isp providers and after changing a few settings for my outgoing smtp server in my email accounts, it’s back to normal ….

Hi Nicky.

Reading between the lines it seems there was a big mess up at one of
the 4mb switches at the exchange in Salt River... No one will
obviously say that, but the technicians implied it.

Everything seems happy at the moment and the good news is that the
mess up was a result of them upgrading the exchange to handle new 8mb
lines... so, if you were previously on 4mb you should check to see (if
you know how) what speed your ADSL modem is syncing at. You might just
be one of the lucky few to be syncing at 8mb.
