City Traffic Services prepared for ‘sighting of the moon’ event in
Three Anchor Bay annual
Today, 08 September, marks the phase of the new moon over Cape Town.
This is an important signifier for Muslims, as it marks the lead-up to
the traditional first sighting of the moon and the end of Ramadan.
Every year thousands of Muslims congregate at Three Anchor Bay the
night after the new moon to wait for the first sighting. This year,
this sighting may occur on Thursday 09 or Friday 10 September. The
celebration of Eid ul-Fitr is then held the day after the moon is
sighted.
Traffic Services has put special measures in place to accommodate the
large crowds who usually gather. Those attending the event are
encouraged to use the following free designated parking areas:
· Parking area 5 (P5): Entry via Vlei Road from Western
Boulevard; turn right into the parking area (adjacent to the Old Green
Point Stadium).
· Postage Stamp parking area: Entry via Vlei Road from Western
Boulevard; turn left into the parking area.
· Reddam parking area: Entry via Western Boulevard – drive past
the entrance to Virgin Active gym along Bill Peters Drive, then right
across the new cut-away, and turn right at the stop street.
Parking restrictions will be strictly enforced in all residential
areas and along Beach Road. No parking is allowed on Western Boulevard
and the centre island on Western Boulevard has not been designated as
a parking area.
Pedestrian access
Pedestrians are encouraged to walk along Bill Peters drive and on the
pavements along Beach Road. Traffic Officers will be deployed at all
major crossings to assist pedestrians.
The City will deploy additional Traffic Officers to alleviate
congestion and requests residents to please exercise patience. Parking
restrictions will be lifted once the moon has been sighted.
