Has anyone had any luck putting a 1G sd card into the 1G ilo player?
The little card symbol shows up on the screen when I put the card in,
it shows up under "About" as "Ext. Media" and I can write song files to
it (ie. it shows up as another drive)....but the the songs don't show
up anywhere.
Can anyone help me?
It would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks.

On earlier iLo's it was found that the iLo was very temperamental about certain cards. There is a compatible list of memory cards for the 256M iLo at http://free.hostdepartment.com/H/HDTVFAQ/id5.htm . There is a note that none of these have been tested on the new 1GB iLo. Also I don't know if anybody has checked whether the iLo can read FAT32 files. Some people have their SD cards formatted with FAT32 and they don't work with some MP3 SD card players. Apparently I just found out that the Rio Forge can read FAT32 formatted cards which does give them an upgrade path. Another issue with SD MP3 players are that some SD cards draw more voltage than others. Many people suspect that this is the true reason (other than FAT16 vs. FAT32 issues) for incompatibilities among SD MP3 card players.

The card I tried is the 1G sandisk, which was on that list, but didn't
work in the 1G player.
I didn't notice the note about none being tested on the 1G. :(
The iLo is made by "Siren"? I'd like to contact the maker to see what
the deal is, but can't seem to find any manufacter info.
This is VERY dissapointing, I thought this was a great purchase, but if
I can't get the sd card to work, I'll have to look for a different
player.
Thanks for the reply David.

There is a real question whether iLo/Siren/GoVideo are all in the same. It seems to be all quite vague. The history seems to be that the MP3 division started out of some Rio execs leaving and forming either their own company or a subsidiary from GoVideo. The history of Wal-Mart is that if they get a negative from a company from providing continued price cuts they will do their best to look elsewhere.

Its hard not to get negative about iLo support being that it is quite similar to other direct to Wal-Mart items (lesser in quality than produced elsewhere). Its pretty hard to get good SD MP3 players nowadays, especially ones that are ID3 based like the iLo. Rio had the best designs but their quality control was something to be desired.

In addition to my iLo, I personally own a Motorola m25 (which I don't even know is being produced) which seems to be of a greater quality than the Rio Forge series that it was based. Unfortunately it doesn't have the FM receiver improvements which were made in the later models so it is pretty useless as an FM receiver. However it is quite durable and certainly has had no problems playing 2GB cards (and probably will take 4GB cards but that has not been tested).

Getting back the iLo you own, did you try it with any lesser capacity SD cards? Did it work with them? Also I know that in the updates to the 256 iLo, the iLo doesn't see all the whole player as one memory card. On one of the menu options you sort of switch which memory you are using  (internal vs. the external card).

Actually David, we did have someone test a 128MB card with the iLo1GB.
The link you posted is outdated, as we have moved to a new server, and
are no longer updating the old one. I really need to post a notice on
the old server, sorry. This is the new URL to the memory card list:
http://users.wbecin.net/mttrails/id5.htm

Oh, and as far as I know, all of the Go Video players use the FAT16
filesystem. Not sure about the Siren though, it has a newer model
Sigmatel chip in it, so maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.

I thought there might be a way to switch over to the "Ext. Media", but
damn if I can find it.
I havent tried a smaller SD card.....I only have a 1G and 2G.
Maybe I'll just do some research and see what everyone is using and
likes...and hopefully I can use the two SD cards I purchased. :(
I appreciate all the info you provided tho.
Thanks again.

So, if the SD cards are FAT32 out of the box, is there a way to format
them in FAT16?
I'll try ANYTHING at this point.
Thanks

I have a SD PNY 512 MB card that works beautifully with my 1G Ilo. Unlike the Ilo 256, the 1G ilo combines the card with the internal memory so you don't have to choose between one or the other. When I insert the card I do see a little card icon appear. Perhaps you should try to reformat the card and synch songs to it using windows media player.

Hum.
I wonder if anyone has had luck with any other brands of 1G sd card.
Thanks for the info, worst case, i'll buy a few 512MB PNY cards then.
