Take Action by THIS Friday to Ban Styrofoam in California! |
Support SB 568 to ban polystyrene take-out containers in California
Take
Action! Our environment & marine species are completely inundated with polystyrene (a.k.a Styrofoam). YOU can help stop this unnecessary form of plastic pollution from reaching our oceans & watersheds by supporting SB 568. This bill goes to vote on Monday, so your voice of support is needed TODAY!
Laura Kasa, Executive Director of Save Our Shores, met with State representatives in Sacramento yesterday during lobby day for SB 568. Senator Blakeslee of California's 15th District is an undecided vote and so he needs to hear from you - his constituents!
California's 15th District includes parts of Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz County, the cities of Scotts Valley, Capitola, Watsonville, Marina, Seaside, Pacific Grove, Monterey, Carmel, all of Big Sur, Paso Robles, Morro Bay, and San Luis Obispo south to Santa Maria.
The Facts about Polystrene:
- Not only do marine species commonly mistake floating pieces of Styrofoam for food, but workers involved in the polystyrene manufacturing process are exposed to toxic chemicals that increase risks of lymphoma, leukemia, lung tumors, and numerous other forms of cancer.
- Our public health is at risk! The carcinogenic chemical Styrene used in polystyrene take-out containers migrates from container to food and beverage when heat, acidity, or fatty foods are involved.
- In California, 47 cities and counties have already enacted their own bans on polystyrene (Styrofoam) take-out containers. SB 568 will enact a state-wide ban on polystyrene take-out containers, and Save Our Shores strongly supports this.
- Save Our Shores strongly supports this important piece of legislation because it will help keep this problematic piece
of pollution off of our beaches and out of our ocean and watersheds where it continually harms marine life and the ocean food chain.
It takes action, local leaders, and community support to change the tides of plastic pollution. YOU can stop plastic from harming marine life, polluting our environment, and costing our communities.
