What exactly is innovation in language learning, teaching, and research?

Dear all,

The dean mentioned more than one time that while reviwers have high
expectations of our center they also ask what exactly is "innovation"
in foreign language instruction and research. Obviously she wants a
good answer from us.

The more I think about it the more I realize this is an interesting
question that deserves a serious discussion.
What exactly is innovation to you?
What is the purpose? Why??
How do we provide a good answer? Perhaps through some kind of
research?
