Waiting Period to Remarry?

Got a question from a potential client...she asked whether there is a
statutory "waiting period" in Illinois to remarry once you are
divorced. Fortunately, there is no such time period. You may remarry
the day you are divorced once you have the decree in hand from the
court.

There is a waiting period for separation before a court will grant a
divorce for irreconcileable differences. Two years, or six months by
agreement betweent the husband and wife. Essentially the legislature
wants a couple to be forced to wait to get a divorce under normal
circumstances. In the event of mental cruelty, abuse, etc., there is
no time requirment.
