In response to queries for a trad clinic, our alumnus Tzill Perahia has offered to teach one.
When: Any weekend in May
Where: Red River Gorge, Kentucky
Length: Two days
No. of Participants: Minimum of 6, maximum of 10
Fee: $100.00
Highly recommended!!    Nothing beats learning traditional climbing on real rock, no less than the Red River Gorge.  T is a hardcore gear climber.  From scary gear(both free and aid ) routes, run-outs, crappy rock, semi-epics, and gets buzzed with a single beer.  Best of all he is fun and a great guy to spend a weekend with. Might even get him to bring his lovely cute big lab that is truly out of shape.
Other than what T is offering, it is highly unlikely to have another clinic till the fall semester or even later.    Matt is graduating, Eric Ulner(owner of Drapers Bluff )  has not e-mailed me back, Rich and Me will mostly be out of Champaign this summer.  From our past clinic, the roster filled up quickly, so sign up!!!!

James Fran

So everything James said is true, except Alpha (my obese lab) will not
be joining us.

Length: Two days

For those who don't know me, I'm Tzlil aka T aka T-pain or as my
latest partner calls me, spanky the camel. Not sure why to be honest.
I'm in SC and will be meeting you guys half way at RRG, KY so we can
all learn that traditional climbing is the only way to climb!!! All in
all I've been climbing varied disciplines around 8-9 years. During my
time in IL i've climbed a large number of the gear lines at Jackson
and Cedars, including a sans-bolt ascent of The Bolted One and various
other dirty wet corners and cracks to be found. Ask me about
southeastern granite and i can go on and on about epic run-outs,
sandbagged routes, late night climbing cut short by lightening and
thunderstorms, stuck ropes, and shady clean aid climbs.

So the clinic, this is going to be pretty informal, based on past
rough guidelines the club has used in the past, over two days. You
guys are going to learn about different types of gear. How to place
gear well, clean gear, build gear anchors, lead gear routes, fall on
gear, maybe fall on gear that rips (properly backed up of course) if
we get really adventurous. It would be really great if you know how
to lead sport already, but really not all that necessary.

Depending how many people we get, plan on days being long and
involving a lot of fiddling with gear and climbing.

In my opinion the best weekend date will be May 14-15 Sat/Sun.

So far interest is (4):
Patrick Heddins
Teddy Yeh
Aneesh Joseph
Michael Kuchenbecker

What i will need from the club is the racks and ropes, including
slings and such, and one of the climbers to transport them from and
back to IL.

That's all i have for now. What we cover and how much will really
depend on the group. Once i have six confirmed interests i'll send out
an email with more details on which crags we are going to hit, where
i'll be camping (most likely miguels for ease of meeting up - unless
everyone is cool with camping in the nice quiet woods)

Cheers

So guys, I am super flexible. I picked the 14-15 because it is after
finals. If people can collectively agree on a weekend then that's good
too.

Brad Senta might be interested as well if its on a different weekend.

Post up on here what the best weekend is and most votes wins i
suppose.

Oh and Lodo, at least one a night i would imagine. Ask molly about the
time i tried to go fishing in sequoia national forest.

Cheers

Awesome, I've been hoping a trad clinic would happen! I'm interested,
but can't do the 14/15th weekend as I need to graduate that day. Any
chance everyone is available the weekend before (May 7th/8th)?

I am definitely interested! I don't have any specific weekends to
suggest, I should be able to go as long as it is not after the weekend
of the 14th

I am interested in the Trad clinic as well. The weekend of the 14th
and 15th works best for me

I'm interested as well. Like Conor though, I can't do it the weekend
of the 14/15 because my brother is graduating. I think I could do the
7th/8th.

James, this is true and hilarious.  Thanks for the laugh.

I can second the suggestion to spend a weekend climbing with T before you die.

Hi, sorry - I think you have the wrong James? I'm still in Champaign but I'm not part of the Climbing Club anymore.

Hi Mike,

Are you looking to get in contact with James Fran? (Climber of 15+ years, from the Philippines?) He's still in town, I can pass a message or your phone number along to him. He still lives in Champaign.
