I'v recently purchased a new iMac. My old iMac is still running a licensed version of lightroom, but this machine has gotten to slow. I'd like to use it on my new iMac. My iMac supplier has moved all the data and software from my old iMac onto my new iMac. But on my new iMac, every time I open Lightroom, I've being asked to start a trial or to purchase lightroom. I've purchased lightroom in a shop in Belgium in 07/2016 and still have the invoice. But meanwhile I've lost my CD-rom, so also my license number or redemption code is lost or whatever is needed to activate it again. For all my other software I still have my CD-rom and activation codes, but this one somehow has gotten lost.

I finally called Adobe in Brussels. The contact phone number is there on the website but, to me, very well hidden. Now I know where to look for it, I can not understand how I overlooked it. But anyway I've gotten a friendly English speaking man on the phone and he helped me to activate it again in a few minutes it was solved.

Lastly, you should never be in a situation where you can't find your serial numbers (for Lightroom and all other software). You need to develop a method of keeping track of these serial numbers in case you ever need them. I use a text file, which is backed up to the cloud.

Go to Finder, hit command-shift-G and paste the above from the tilde to Lightroom in the dialog and you'll see it. If you open that file with TextEdit, you'll see that it is a simple xml file with the serial no clearly marked."

@ jim wilde : when I search for lightroom 6.0 (my version) I can only find a mail pointing me out that my trial version will end. I start thinking that I never activated my purchased copy. But than again, how is it possible that I have Lightroom open on my old Mac.

Possible nooobie question.

I would like to be able to set the file naming dialog to have the sequential continue it's numbering from where it left off from the last export.

At the moment, it resets the number back to 001 for each sequence, meaning I have to rename the files once it has finished exporting, especially annoying if I'm working on deadline trying to get images out asap and uploaded as soon as I finish optimising it.

It also presents an issue when splitting the export into sets to take advantage of the 'multiple core/tasking' routines. Each set now starts with a 001. More renaming.

Is there a way to set LR to continue it's numbering routine rather than resetting to 001.

I don't know of a way in LR to do this but I know it can be done in Adobe Bridge. It only takes bridge a few second to rename hundreds of files.

Ant, what version of Lr?

I see a 'Start Number' option in the File Name panel in the Export dialog of v2.4. That would sort of fix your problem, but you'd have to keep track, and manually enter it for each subsequent export.

@Mark

I presently use PhotoMechanic as a browser and it does just what I need, however I did want to keep it all in LR and not have to jump around programmes.

@Purple

That's the problem, yes I've got the Start Number option, however it's the keeping track of where I'm upto that's the problem, especially when working under pressure.
Perhaps I'll just have to keep the file names as they are (maybe add a time code, so they stay in the order I process and use an AppleScript to rename them with something meaningful. However once again it's an extra step, which is not welcome

BTW and I know it's OT - Does Windows have an equivalent to AppleScript, some thing which works as Explorer level just to rename files. I've got a netbook running XP and would like to be able to use the same workflow.

OK, a work around solution

Export with a custom text field - working - and have the hour, minute and second fields enabled, this will then 'name' the files in the order I process them (their importance for the deadline), exported files now called 'workingHHMMSS' and imported back into catalogue, and then I hit F2 to do a manual rename with a relevant name to the story and a sequencial number, it appears to be easier to keep track of where I've got to rather than hitting export and hoping I've rememebered where I am on the list of files being exported.

This list is proving very useful for this LR noobie, lots of background reading, so thanks to all the posters.

Sorry I don't think I understand how that will help me with sequential numbering and have it not reset to 1 every time I do an export, maybe I'm missing something?

Well, obviously I don't know your folder naming habits, but say they are named in some sort of date format, you could then have LR rename all the images in the folder with the folder name and a sequential number, such as 2009.10.10.001, or you could name the folder numerically starting with 1, 2, 3, etc and then have LR rename the contents to include the folder name and a sequential number, such as 01001. and the next folders first image would be 02001
If you are already well aware of the many options for renaming in the library module, then please ignore this post.

Don't think it would solve the issue around each export sequence starting from 001, rather than numerically continuing from where it finished on the last export, but thanks for the input.

Where is the best place to do a feature request with the LR developers?

Why not use the title, or the caption, or one of the other text fields to keep your special sequence number in, and then simply include that in the export name?

AFA remembering where you left off. Why not tag photos as you export them?

1. go through the photos and make your picks, identifying all the ones you are going to export.
2. in your library view filter, choose attribute and choose "flagged as pick" (now you will see ONLY the photos you have deemed worthy)
3. set the title (not the filename, the TITLE field) on all of the photos to be the same thing (the name of the job you are shooting for)
4. since you have a sense for what is most important, go through the photos and set each CAPTION field to the ordering number you want (left-padded with zeros)
5. add a text filter, show only the photos where the keywords do not include EXPORTED
6. start processing photos
7. when you export each one use Title-Caption to get your sequential numbering in the order that matters to you.
8. then tag the exported photo as EXPORTED, which will cause it to immediately disappear from view (filtered out).
9. If at any time you want to see the exported photos, just change the text filter to be photos that INCLUDE the keyword EXPORTED.

To avoid the numbering, keep in mind that you have the ability to order the photos however you want in the thumbnail view... you don't have to sort them, you can just drag them around and create a custom, and in the custom order you can see that they are all numbered from 1 to N where N is number of photos. It's worth poking around in the various lightroom newsgroups and trying to find out if those numbers (called INDEX NUMBERS) can be used instead of the generated export-specific sequence number. I'd look into that first, and if that didn't pan out fall back to the system I described above.

Another thing you could do is make virtual copies and name the copies... there is in the metadata a "Copy Name" field, which lightroom normally sets to Copy 1, Copy 2, Copy 3 when you make virtual copies... but you can name it whatever you want, and you can display the copy name right on the thumbnail. For instance when I produce a photo at standard proportions and then a customer orders an odd crop like 5x7 or 8x10, I make a vc of the image and set the copy name to "5x7" or "8x10". All the copies are stacked in my thumbnail view and I have it set to display the file name and the copy name, so I see right on my thumbnail an annotation that tells me what the copy is. You could do this too and make a VC of any image you are exporting and set the COPY NAME field to whatever it is you want the image to be called. You can filter on VCs versus master originals on the attribute filtering, so you could rapidly switch back and forth to seeing all your exported work. I just checked and you can include the COPY NAME field as part of your exported file name. So that should work too.

1. Process the file most important to you.
2. Make a VC prior to export
3. Set the COPY NAME field to your sequential number (padded w/zeros)
4. Export, using COPY NAME field as part of filename

Added advantage is that you don't need to reimport your work after exporting. To see the copy names on your thumbnail view, go to your view options, choose grid view tab. Check "Show Grid Extras" and select Compact Cells from the drop down. Then in the Compact Cell Extras box check off index number, top label (choose file name), bottom label (choose COPY NAME). That should do it.

Hope you find something in the above that is useful

Wow, thanks for such a long explanation of some work arounds, very useful and I'll explore further.

Of course, it would be great just to have an option to continue with the sequential numbering and have a reset to 1 as part of the rename/export dialog, as PhotoMechanic does. I'm know I'm not the only photographer who doesn't wait until they 'developed' all their edits before exporting, getting images uploaded via FTP whilst working on another.

LR continues to throw up many great ways of working whilst still making me scratch my head as I try to integrate it into my workflow.

Still learning ;-)
