I listened to an old IA where you mention dronecopter(???) & you mentioned all the creative features it and others have done for the AR DRONE. Im just wondering why you havenot mentioned the arducopter, which is actually completely FOSS, The firmware on the ARD is closed, while everything on the A is open. If you want killer features you cant compare a toy like the drone and a professional setup like the A. I just ordered a data cable(dont have the specs to make one) so i can control the onboard camera pan+tilt via my goggles. Take a look  its really kool.

The AR Drone is good for people who don't want to fiddle with hardware, they just want to software control it. There is already open firmware that replaces the AR Drone stuff.

Arducopter is for people who are as interested in the hardware as the software.

Im not sure why you say users have an interest in the hardware. I mean theres not much  one can change about how the gps, sonar, accelerometers etc work. The software runs and interacts with them. You dont really have much choice or opportunity to fiddle with those bits of h/w. My problem with the drone is its got a shitty range and cant handle anything more than a light breeze.

Did you build it or did it come pre-assembled?

I bought mine, ready to fly. I have rebuilt parts, replacing motors, arms etc since ive had a few smashes but hey thats part of the fun. In the end there are a few wires connecting different bits but its not overly complicated. I havent smashed my ardrone such that it requires a motor or similar to be replaced, but i have done basic repairs like hot gluing and tape when the bumpers get broken.

There are lots of knobs to turn, grab or watch some videos on the mission planner. Without a copter connected you dont get to see all the screens, but im pretty sure there are vids showing it in action.
