Radio broadcasting in India began when the Indian Broadcasting Company, IBC, inaugurated its first radio station 7BY in Bombay.

Judit Polgár, a Hungarian chess grandmaster who is the only woman on FIDE's Top 100 Players list, was born in Budapest.

The Sri Lankan Civil War began with the killing of 13 Sri Lanka Army soldiers by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorist group.
