| Helllooo! As you know, I have always been big on community service and extracurricular activities, and things really haven't changed much since I was in elementary school. :) A couple months ago, I met James Koshiba, co-founder of the group Kanu Hawaii, and I really liked that he believed that public education should be the responsibility of the entire community, not just one group of people. His values seemed to align with what I have come to believe over the last 5 years as a teacher. I joined Kanu and found myself among an amazing group of young, motivated, smart, and civic-minded people that want to make Hawaii a better place to live through positive, grass-roots change. For more info on Kanu, you can check out their website: www.kanuhawaii.org Some of the campaigns that they have successfully run include Eat Local and Live Aloha. Live Aloha Day is coming up on Saturday, June 19th, and the purpose of this day is to promote the aloha spirit through community service. We hope that this day is not just about people coming out for one day, but hopefully making a significant connection with the work they do or the group they work with so that they will want to do that type of work or work with that group again. There are a number of projects that we are organizing across the state and island, so if you don't want to come to my site (it's pretty far) then it would still be awesome if you made it to one that is closer to where you live. Here are some of the projects: Heeia Stream Clean Up Waikiki Elementary Garden Project Kalihi Valley Homes Manoa Women's Transitional Shelter MA'O Organic Farms (This is where I will be!) For the full list of sites check out: http://www.kanuhawaii.org/campaigns/ I know that some of you are probably thinking that only crazy tree-hugging people or teachers who have nothing better to do (like me) are into this stuff, but I hope that you will try it anyway and find that there are many local (and recently local) people who are not necessarily "community service" people but they just want to help out, be a part of something great, and maybe make some new friends. I will be out at MA'O Organic Farms in Waianae from 9a-12p, so I would love it if you joined me. We may be working out in the field, so you'll need clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, a bottle of water, and a dish for the potluck lunch we'll be having after our work. I live in town, so if you want to carpool with me, first dibs on seats goes to whoever emails me back first! Please RSVP via email, phone (391-4141), Facebook, or on the Kanu website and let me know if you will be able to make it. Here's the link to the Kanu Hawaii page: http://www.kanuhawaii.org/campaigns/details/action/?id=9&actionid=1275464942142494 If you're not in Hawaii, please forward this to anyone back at home that you think might be interested. Thank you! Hope to see you there. Much love and aloha, Cheril "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." -Mahatma Gandhi |
