Sharda vows vengeance when her husband is murdered by his two evil cousins, Bhishamber and Bhanu, and she and her two young sons are thrown out on the street. Those sons grow into the upstanding police officer Ram and the easily tempted dreamer Lakhan. If the family is to be avenged, Ram will have to lead his brother away from the path of corruption he's strayed onto, and protect him from the influence of Bhanu and Bhishamber.

Rakhee Gulzar Jackie Shroff Anil Kapoor Madhuri Dixit Amrish Puri Dimple Kapadia Gulshan Grover Paresh Rawal Anupam Kher Saeed Jaffrey Dalip Tahil Raza Murad Annu Kapoor Satish Kaushik Sonika Gill Anand Balraj Mukri Lalita Kumari

clear peak of the subhash ghai aesthetic, if there is a subhash ghai aesthetic, other than desai derived (those multi-stage, narrative song sequences come on) bricolage stripped of his characteristic irony and cultural layering, blown up to giant size through command of the (immediate) iconographic image.

working with an incredible laxmikant-pyarelal score (rare in its conceptually dense cycling of repeated motifs throughout the course of the film) and genuinely impressive photography (from ashok mehta, just off a string of masterpieces that included ijaazat, utsav and 36 chowringhee lane) ghai charges his story of motherly vengeance and brotherly loyalty with a moment to moment imagination rare in popular cinema - slight as it may be, the image of rakhee gulzar dressed in the sari covered with her murdered husband's dried blood at the top of the stairs pointing a gun at amrish puri's forehead (dimple kapadia holding a machine gun as backup) is the kind of thing that sticks.

Masala at its finest. The type of movie where a formidable Rakhee obsessively keeps a sari splattered with the blood of her dead husband under a religious shrine but also contains a glorious 10 minutes dance off between Anil Kapoor and a comically awful NRI character who is wearing a bedazzled disco outfit. Last stretch of the movie with Bekhabar Bewafa and onwards felt like a disorienting but delightful fever dream. Sad that they gave Rakhee a gun but didn't let her really use it but they also gave Dimple a machine gun and she got to use it!!!! Think Ghai works best when making revenge films.

Be still my heart! You know we're talking serious business when we get a theme motif, and what a one! Why is it that epic, mythic family melodrama is so perfect? I cannot!
Rakhee owns the death glare, pretty sure she actually did not need her sons to be her weapons, especially as she gets Dimple Kapadia as wingwoman! Incidentally a Dimple with the bestest hair and bestest clothes - or so I thought... Until Sonika Gill entered the scene -because also the hair! the makeup! the shoulders! the sequins! In my next life I want to be her! Scrap that, I want to be her in this life. Other life goals, get my own entourage and a catchy entry song. Could go on listing fabulous things, there are so many.

This one does the Deewaar thing between the two brothers well enough, and while I wouldn't call Ram Lakhan as good as that movie, this one gets bonus points for making the mother character not just a passive bystander, but an active (and badass) participant in the revenge itself. Raakhee is great in that role, and her entrance during the climax with the blood-stained sari and the pistol was a really fantastic scene. But Anil Kapoor is the real standout of this cast, bringing a great deal of charisma and humor to the role and making Lakhan likeable even when he's at his most corrupt and bone-headed. Overall, very enjoyable flick.

I've never been so shocked by the plot not incorporating a twist. I never stopped believing that this was all apart of Lakhan's plan to get closer to the enemy. I never considered that he actually went on the wrong path

I'm just going to admit my bias regarding this film right now. I've watched it countless times since I was a little kid and I make it a point to watch it once a year. The quintessential Subhash Ghai film. Over the top drama, emotional pull, and cartoonish villains. And of course, great music. The entire cast play their parts to perfection. Anil Kapoor is the real draw here- his character and performance really drive the film. Of course, the film is silly if you watch it with modern eyes, but if you are able, recalibrate your mind to that era and try to watch it with that mindset. You'll leave thoroughly entertained.

In the Hindi film industry, remakes are considered a safe option. While most of the time, filmmakers pick South hits, some choose to remake iconic Bollywood films. While remakes like Don and Agneepath turned out to be huge money-spinners at the box office, Ajay Devgn-starrer Himmatwala and Ram Charan's Zanjeer were big flops.

At times, after a grand announcement, things don't work out and the makers have to finally shelve the project. Below, let's take a look at the list of remakes of iconic Bollywood films that made headlines but didn't see the light of the day for different reasons.

For the unversed, Satte Pe Satta was released in 1982 and featured Hema Malini opposite Big B along with Shakti Kapoor, Sachin, Amjad Khan among others in key roles. It was inspired by Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan (1957).

Featuring Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, and Madhuri Dixit in the lead roles, Subhash Ghai's Ram Lakhan was among the biggest hits of 1989. Back in 2015, director Rohit Shetty had announced the Ram Lakhan remake leaving fans excited. For the remake, Shetty had teamed up with Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and Subhash Ghai's Mukta Arts.

Several popular names including Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Arjun Kapoor among others were reportedly approached for the film. However, in 2017, the director revealed that he has decided not to go ahead with the Ram Lakhan remake. Citing that no actor is ready to do a two-hero film, he made it official that the project is shelved.

Pankaj Parashar's Chaalbaaz, starring the late Sridevi in a double role, was loosely an adaptation of Seeta Aur Geeta and turned out to be the fifth-highest-grossing film of 1989. Sridevi won the Filmfare Best Actress award for her performance, which is still considered one of her best roles.

Bhushan Kumar and Pankaj Parashar revealed their association on Chaalbaaz In London in April 2021, starring Shraddha Kapoor. The actress was to play the first double role of her career in the film. While there were rumours that it would be a remake of Sridevi's classic Chaalbaaz, the makers assured that the action-comedy will have new characters.

While the preparations were going on, COVID-19 played a spoilsport and the makers decided to put it on hold. Later, several reports suggested that the film has been shelved and there has been no update on the project since then. However, an official announcement is still awaited.

Asked at an event for IIFA Awards about filmmaker Rohit Shetty's reported plans for a remake of the film, with younger actors, Anil quipped: "I have been hearing this for three and half years. Let him make the film now. Nobody can portray Lakhan better than me. Let's do a lottery on that."

"Ram Lakhan", helmed by Subhash Ghai, released in 1989, and became a blockbuster. Reportedly, Shetty is planning to cast Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh as Ram (played by Jackie Shroff in the Ghai film) and Lakhan respectively.

He also added: "That time I felt like that I should have got awards for 'Eeshwar', and 'Ram Lakhan' as a popular film. 'Ram Lakhan' was a big hit that time. I even feel I did not get that many awards for 'Lamhe'."
