Hi all,

I've been using QR codes to give students on and off-line treasure
hunts, but would welcome some ideas of how to incorporate them more
efficiently into classroom activities.

Cheers,
Phil

I'm not one to run to Wikipedia most of the time, but the answer to the question "what are QR codes" is pretty well-handled here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code

I believe that the most recent issue of College and Research Libraries News has something about the use of QR codes in libraries. That issue isn't online yet, I don't think, but should be soon. http://crln.acrl.org/

Drat. Sent my previous message too soon. The C&RL News article on QR codes was in *last* November's issue (not this November upcoming) and can be found here: http://crln.acrl.org/content/71/10.toc

Hi David
QR codes are those black and white squares which look a bit like crosswords that you often see on posters and in magazines. If you see them on the internet they take you directly to a webpage if you click on them. If you see them in print media, or on your screen or even on a Tshirt, using your smartphone loaded with a QR scanner app you can scan the box and it will take you directly to whatever website (without having to type in or google a link). (NOTE - Even I, who consider myself to be mobile-stupid managed to do this!)
Here's a link which has some ideas for using QR codes in education - http://www.shambles.net/pages/learning/ict/qrcode/
You can generate links using this site: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/

My knowledge comes from chats with Jim Buckingham.

Cheers

Good Morning All,
For further ideas on how to integrate QR codes in the classroom please check the following links:

The former link offers a collection of sites where you can build and/or test QR codes, while the latter link offers links to different sites on QR codes. Edutopia is a good place to start if you are looking for answers to integrating technology in your lessons.

Sincerely,
Susie

Hi there

I suggest that now we know what QR codes are, we revisit this topic in a couple of months which will give folk time to 'have a go'.

Just created an Info Hunt type of activity involving Library Orientation.

So I've made the questions and scanned them along with the answers and placed them all over the AAMC Library.  The Library Doors has the question about Library timings, the Help Desk (What do you need to borrow and item from the Library); General Collection (How long can you borrow books), etc.

There are like 10 Questions and 10 Answers - the very basic and students can go round find the questions and answers and match them together.

Thanks for this, will let you know if I come up with more stuff and how the students' feedback are.

Regards,
Maryann

Hi Maria,

I like that you've this idea to trial codes.  As part of our English Festival, I put together a 20 code treasure hunt which had teams running around our campus.  Each code contained questions and a clue to the location of the next.  teams could, if they wishes, text their answers to a team member at the finish line to complete the answersheet, or do it 'on the run'.  if they were wrong they had to go back, so texting was mor efficient.
