This frequently happens to online-only games. The Matrix Online shut down in 2009, but has been preserved (to an extent) by dedicated players. Even then, you can't actually play the game. You can explore its world, but you can't do quests or engage in combat. What was once a thriving MMO based on a hugely popular sci-fi property is now essentially an empty museum piece. There's even less available for games like Lawbreakers, Radical Heights, TERA Online, EverQuest Online Adventures, MapleStory Adventures, and many more. Those are all multiplayer games, and it's a sad financial reality that when the developer or publisher doesn't want to or can't devote the resources to keep a game online, they often become defunct.

Forcing a game with a single-player campaign to always be online is pushing eventual obsolescence onto something that could otherwise be preserved. Unless Rocksteady adds the option to play offline, Suicide Squad will stop being playable when they stop supporting it. That's a blow to games history, a blow to the developers who have spent years of their lives working on it, and a blow to players who might want to revisit a game they loved. Ironically, for a game whose anti-hero stars have explosives implanted in their brains to keep them in line, the game can only stay alive as long as those in charge allow it to.

Developer Rocksteady Studios' new live-service multiplayer shooter, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, went live for Deluxe Edition players on January 30. For those playing in regions like New Zealand, the game went live on January 29 here in the states (but it was January 30 for that region). Those first players were met with an unfortunate "story completion" bug that caused Rocksteady to take the game offline to fix. That fix took hours, leaving those who paid for the Deluxe Edition, which is $30 more than the standard edition, unable to play the game at all as Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice Leauge is an always-online game.

Yesterday, developer Rocksteady Studios took its new live-service multiplayer shooter set in the Batman: Arkham universe, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, offline after some Early Access players encountered a "story completion bug." Rocksteady said yesterday that in order to fix the issue, it needed to take the always-online game offline.

Roughly six hours later, the studio said it identified the problem causing the bug, noting, "We hope to implement it and have the game back online as soon as possible." That was the last thing Rocksteady said about the bug, but players that purchased the Deluxe Edition, which allows you to jump in 72 hours early, were able to hop back in at some point yesterday.

That's still too early for those in the U.S. to jump in and play, but for players in places like New Zealand, that Early Access period is live. Or rather, it was, before Rocksteady took the always-online game offline.

While Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is not the first live-service, always-online game to run into issues that cause it to go offline, it's still a mega bummer for players so excited to check it out they paid an additional $30 to do so 72 hours early. Hopefully Rocksteady and publisher Warner Bros. Interactive find a way to compensate those affected by this move.

Indeed, Suicide Squad isn't the only upcoming single-player/co-op game to require an always online internet connection. Redfall is another highly anticipated game that's gone down this route, as have many games before it, such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and IO Interactive's recent Hitman trilogy. It's a shame, especially when Suicide Squad gives you the option of having bots fill the roles of your villainous team mates - just like Left 4 Dead 2 did when playing offline.

Back 4 Blood was an always-online game at launch, too, but the team at Turtle Rock ended up implementing an offline mode after players kicked off about this exact issue during the game's launch. Will Rocksteady dodge roll in the same direction? We'll have to wait and see.

This decision can rub some fans the wrong way. Having to be constantly online to play a predominantly single-player game can be irritating to some players, especially those who struggle with a stable internet connection. Will that be changed in the future?

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was given a formal announcement as the newest project from Rocksteady at the DC FanDome event in 2020. At the time, outside of the graphic novels, of course, we only had the one flop of a film based on this antihero group, so many fans were hesitant to see Rocksteady tackle this property. Now that we've gotten a few trailers and footage of gameplay, however, it has become clear that Rocksteady hasn't lost its touch. We took on this suicide mission for you and made off with all the details you need to know about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Release date

It's no secret to anyone who attempted to play Payday 3 near its launch that it had more than a few issues. This co-op shooter is built on the idea of you and three friends teaming up to pull off various heists to collect money, level up, and unlock new skills -- and then repeat it all on higher difficulty levels. However, due to some major server issues, the majority of people haven't been able to find matches at all, leading to a major outcry for an offline mode since there's no way to interact with the game otherwise. As of now, the game remains an always-online experience. Fortunately, developer Starbreeze Studios has been quick to respond to player feedback, but do its plans include an offline mode?
Is Payday 3 getting an offline mode?

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has a heavy presence of online elements, so one question that naturally arises is whether it's possible to play the game offline. As a follow-up to the Batman: Arkham series from developer Rocksteady Studios, Suicide Squad: KTJL steps into a legacy that was always focused on the offline single-player experience. Despite the ensemble focus of the new game, it's still possible to play through the game's campaign solo, but that doesn't always guarantee the ability to disconnect from the internet.

What makes the situation worse is a lack of online stability for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League so far, which has made the game unplayable for pre-order players with early access more than once. The game was taken offline on its first day to address a bug that auto-completed save files and went down again a day later for general maintenance. As reported by VGC, Rocksteady apologized to players by offering $20 worth of in-game currency to those affected, a nice gesture that doesn't erase the fact that Suicide Squad: KTJL's launch couldn't have gone much more poorly.

Squad! Assemble! Present... Posters! While we doubt that the reprobates, criminals and killers that make up the DC Comics' line-up of villains coerced into helping stop bigger threats would ever agree to such military discipline, the cast playing the leads in Suicide Squad has obligingly debuted stylistic new character posters for the movie online, and are now, via Warner Bros. available in clearer form for us all to see.

There are literally some players who have not been able to play the game online at all since launch. Others have had their mastery level stuck, unable to progress in the endgame. In several patches now, none of this has changed for many players, and others are now finding new issues or blockers introduced as of this latest patch, which as of yet, has not been rolled back.
