Hierarchy among geese

[Judy Mellin]

This morning, I saw about 40 geese in a straight line, coming down a slope, crossing a sidewalk and then jumping one at a time into a pond. No one bumped another, got out of order or tried to cut ahead of another. Any ideas about what prompted this? Thanks!
