I thought that many of you might be interested in this. Wisconsin is doing a breeding bird atlas and it’s also helping record changes in locations of birds due to climate change and they mention that here. There’s also opportunities to financially support what they’re doing if anyone is so inclined.

The Atlas Book is Drafted!
At long last, we have a draft of the atlas book! This represents 18 months of work from over 20 contributors and is estimated to be about 700 pages. We are currently editing the draft and continuing to prepare final versions of maps and figures. Photos have been chosen for species account headers, and discussions with the publisher continue to refine the final design elements. We are continuing to push hard, aiming for publication in late 2026 or early 2027!
Analysis of Atlas Range Shifts Published
A new paper has been published using atlas records to examine the shifting breeding ranges of Wisconsin's bird species. Poleward Range Shifts of Breeding Bird in Wisconsin (Stallworth et al. 2005, Ecology and Evolution) found that many southerly species are expanding and shifting range boundaries northward. Northerly species as a group were more mixed but showed northward movement in mean latitudes, especially for boreal species.
Last Chance to Sponsor: 4 Additional Species for the Second Atlas Book!

The Atlas is seeking additional support for publication of our book. Since 2015, a successful fundraising campaign called Sponsor-a-Species, has supported many aspects of atlas development. The book will have 257 species accounts, including four intriguing final additions, creating opportunities for you to be included as a sponsor.
  • Kelp Gull
  • Mallard x American Black Duck (hybrid)
  • Sandhill x Whooping Crane (hybrid)
  • Golden-winged x Blue-winged Warbler (hybrid)

Crazy nesters: Kelp Gull and Black-billed Magpie!

Many people have already heard about the strangest North American breeding record of the year — the South American Kelp Gull that has hybridized with a Herring Gull on a roof in Milwaukee. The next most northerly nest record (also in a hybrid pairing) was on the coast of Louisiana over 20 years ago.

Atlas Central also received photographs in July from a successful Black-billed Magpie nest in Douglas County. This is the first ever known successful nest in the state, coming on the heels of the first known attempt in Bayfield County in 2022.
