Hello Bird People,
You are probably getting tired of these reports from River Trail N.C.
but when it starts out at 8 degrees you've got to spend some of the
time inside. So I spent 90 min inside watching feeders & 30 min
walking around. I am getting closer to adding Pileated Woodpecker for
the new year having heard it calling once but I could not track it
down. "Heard onlys" don't count on my year list so I'll keep trying.
It's here so I just have to keep looking. Spent about 15 min walking
with Krys K. where he had seen the Pileated on Sunday but no luck with
that.
River Trail Nature Center (8:50-10:50 a.m.)
Canada Goose (3, in the river with lots of floating ice)
Mourning Dove (7)
Red Bellied Woodpecker (3)
Downy Woodpecker (5)
Hairy Woodpecker (1-F)
FLICKER (1)
(Pileated Woodpecker-probable, heard only)
Blue Jay (2)
Crow (H-2 but not close)
Chickadee (4)
W.B. Nuthatch (3)
Starling (2, at the feeders)
Cardinal (9)
Tree Sparrow (4)
WHITE THROATED SPARROW (1)
Junco (8)
House Finch (4)
Goldfinch (5)
House Sparrow (~35)
Beck Lake, Lake Opeka & Axehead Lake are now all completely frozen
with the only water related birds seen were 18 Herring Gulls on the
ice at Opeka.
Had 19 species at River Trail & added Pigeons & the Herring Gulls for
a total of 21.
Can't count the Pileated so Bird-Of-The-Day will be the Flicker &
Runner-Up will be the White
Throated Sparrow. Should be warmer tomorrow so I hope to get back to walking.
