Author and archivist Erik Rebain will be discussing the life of murderer Nathan Leopold, with a focus on his ornithological work. Rebains book, Arrested Adolescence, discusses the fascinating life of Nathan Leopold. From the beginning of Leopold's birding journey in 1910 he was mentored and befriended by prominent birders and he showed an exciting precocity with his publications and research into the Kirtland's Warbler as a teenager. Though all that promise was halted when he and his friend Richard Loeb committed a murder and Leopold's birding influenced their decision of where to hide the body, to their detriment. After being sentenced to prison Leopold bred and raised a series of birds in his cell and kept very short year lists of the birds he could see through the bars. Once he was paroled to Puerto Rico he jumped into birding again; helping with efforts to save the Puerto Rican parrot, writing articles, and starting his collection anew.
