Hello Bird People,
Went by myself to Almond Marsh in the hopes of finding a Blue Winged
Teal but found none in spite of there being many ducks to look at.
Next to Rollins Savanna where there were few ducks of any kind. Then I
joined up with David Johnson to check the northern lakes which we did
in spite of the almost constant rain viewing mostly from the car
except for when David used his scope in the rain.
Almond Marsh (8:10-8:45 am)
D.C. Cormorant (5)
Canada Goose (8)
Mallard (22)
Gadwall (12)
Shoveler (10)
Wigeon (6)
Ring Necked Duck (95-100)
Lesser Scaup (2)
Bufflehead (20-22)
Goldeneye (2-F)
Mourning Dove (1), Red Bellied Woodpecker (H-1) & Red Wings (6)
Rollins Savanna North End (9:20-10:10 am)
Canada Goose (2 fly-bys)
Mallard (2)
Shoveler (2-M & 1-F)
Common Merganser (3-M & 10-F)
Sandhill Crane (1 fly-by)
Kestrel (1)
Flicker (1)
In a pond off Rt 83 near Grand we saw 3 Shovelers & 6 Bufflehead.
At West Loon Lake we saw 2 Mute Swans, 2 Goldeneye & 2 Bufflehead.
From the parking area for Channel Lake where it was raining very hard we saw
White Pelican (29), Common Loon (20) plus Ring Billed (~75) & Herring
(~100) gulls
From the north end of Lake Marie we had more Pelicans (46) & Common
Loons (32) plus
D.C. Cormorants (4), Bufflehead (1-M), Common Mergansers (12) plus more Gulls.
From the south end of Lake Marie by the Sandbar location we saw 8 more
Loons, 22 more Pelicans, a Great Blue Heron, D.C. Cormorant (2),
Common & Red Breasted Mergansers & Redheads (8). Also had a fly-by
adult Bald Eagle & a few Herring Gulls.
Also had an excellent lunch at the Arby's in Antioch to avoid the rain
for a little while.
I think I had 36 species for the day & Bird-Of-The-Day will be a tie
between the many Pelicans & Loons we saw today. Runners-Up to the
adult Bald Eagle & the hunting Kestrel.
