to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
Well after yesterday's bad luck at Montrose today I had good luck at
Gillson Park.
Funny how things even up like that.
Didn't see many species today but the east winds were too much for
most of the land birds.
In spite of the hard east winds I spent 90 min doing a lake watch &
only saw 2 migrant ducks.
But the 2 were female BLACK SCOTERS so were worth the wait. They went
by going south & were very close to shore for great looks. Just before
the Scoters went by I had a very cooperative SNOW BUNTING on the beach
right in front of me & it stayed for about 20 min also giving great
looks. That was yesterday's target at Montrose but today it all worked
out.
The only other lake fliers were Cormorants, Geese & Ring Billed &
Herring Gulls.
Not many land birds due to the east winds & the only sparrows were 2
White Crowned Sparrows & 8 Juncos.
So only 19 species today at Gillson plus roadside Pigeons for a day's
total of 20.
Bird-Of-The-Day will be a tie between the Snow Bunting & the Black Scoters.
