Hello Bird People,
Another day another Hawk Watch! This one at Ft Sheridan & I saw 10 species of raptors with the best being one Swainson's Hawk which flew by at about 10:30 am. I was glad to see that hawk as I had just missed one by five min on Sunday.
The other 9 raptors seen today were Turkey Vultures (lots), Sharp Shinned Hawks (also lots), Cooper's Hawks (2), Harriers (2), Bald Eagle (1), Red Shouldered Hawk (2), Red Tailed Hawk (lots), Merlin (2) & Peregrine (1). As always my totals were only a small portion of what the official counters saw.
But perhaps an even better sighting than the Swainson's Hawk was a White Faced/Glossy Ibis which flew by two hours later. It was a young bird so even the photos taken could not prove which species it was. Maybe some of the photos will show (when blown up) if it had a red eye or not.
Bird-Of-The-Day will be a tie between the Swainson's Hawk & the Dark Ibis.
