I just had a Spotted Sandpiper calling over my house in Des Plaines, this evening for at least 5 minutes (9:20-9:25 pm), seemingly flying in circles.
I'm near Arndt Park in Des Plaines but there's no wetland there, and no water near here except over half mile away (DP River, with Lake Opeka a mile away).
This time of year I sometimes head Nighthawk near my house, and Killldeer have done it often over Arndt, but strange to have a calling late evening SPSA. Anyone else ever hear similar situation?
Nothing unusual, but today I found that there's a pair of Barn Swallows nesting inside the building adjacent to the Lake Park (Lake Opeka) golf club house. It's in the open air area where the boat rentals are paid. Also heard two warbling vireos singing on the east side of the lake today
Finally- just a heads up that a record 257 observers reported 204 bird species this year on the Cook County portion of the Illinois Spring Bird Count May 6th. The species list will be publicized later in June ... thanks to all who contributed!
