Hello Bird People,
After yesterday's fairly long drive to see the Ruff & then back to see
the Little Blue Heron I decided on a short drive to Skokie Lagoons to
look for nothing in particular. Didn't see anything special as the big
numbers of Warblers have not arrived yet. Did see three new year birds
but all were common so no big deal.
Skokie Lagoons (7:45-10:45 am)
D.C. Cormorant (1)
Great Blue Heron (2)
Canada Goose (12)
Wood Duck (7)
Mallard (5)
Osprey (1 on the nest platform & 1 hunting)
Killdeer (1, in a wet field)
Spotted Sandpiper (1)
Mourning Dove (2)
Red Bellied Woodpecker (3)
Downy Woodpecker (H-1)
Flicker (4)
Blue Jay (2)
Crow (1)
Chickadee (2)
House Wren (3)
Ruby Crowned Kinglet (4)
Blue Gray Gnatcatcher (2)
Tree (10), Rough Winged (6) & Barn (5) Swallows
GRAY CATBIRD (1) (FOY)
Robin (~20)
Starling (5)
Nashville Warbler (1)
Palm Warbler (4)
Yellow Rumped Myrtle Warbler (~22)
Northern Waterthrush (H-1)
(Dan H photographed a male Hooded Warbler but I did not see that one)
Cardinal (H-2)
ROSE BREASTED GROSBEAK (1-M, singing) (FOY)
INDIGO BUNTING (1) (FOY)
Song Sparrow (2)
Swamp Sparrow (H-1)
Red Wings (8)
Grackles (4)
Cowbird (1-F)
House Finch (H-1)
Goldfinch (1)
So 38 species for the day at the Lagoons with no roadside additions.
Not much to choose from but Bird-Of-The-Day will be the fine looking,
singing Rose Breasted Grosbeak & Runners-Up to the hunting Osprey &
the year bird Indigo Bunting.
