to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
Wanted to go for the Naperville Rufous Hummingbird yesterday but did
not due to the snow.
My baby Prius C is great for fuel economy but is not ready for
traction in snow. In fact it's like an ice skate on ice. So I waited
until today & looked on Discord to see if anyone reported it.
It was seen & reported at 8:14 am by Sam E. Thank you Sam!
Drove out to Luis M's place & he drove the rest of the way to
Naperville. Arrived at about 9:45 am & by 10 am we were looking at the
little Hummingbird. Watched it for about 30 min as it alternated
between its favorite shrub/tree & the feeder. About 7 folks were also
there to see it while Luis & I were there.
You can check Discord or Ebird for directions to the Naperville site
but visiting is only allowed between 8 am & 12:30 pm daily. I don't
know how long this permission will go on. And with the cold weather
that's coming it's possible the bird may leave or die once the feeder
freezes up. The owner is keeping the feeder heated so that will help
for a while.
Sad but that's the way it is with late arriving Hummingbirds.
The little Hummer is my 299th bird for 2025 so somehow I must find one
more to make it to 300 as I usually do. But this is my last time
trying as my lack of mobility will surely keep me from doing it again.
So this is my last hurrah so to speak.
Thanks go to Nathan G & Henry M for early reports & getting permission
to visit.
Thanks also go to the homeowner Bill for allowing folks to visit.
Obviously the Rufous Hummingbird is the Bird-Of-The-Day.
