to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
Saw about 8 other birders here today, which is more than usual. Tried
to travel off trail with my wheelchair/walker but had to give up as
the vegetation won't let me pass. So I missed a few species that the
others can get to but I don't know how to get around that problem.
Muirhead Springs (7:25-10:50 am)
P.B. Grebe (17 at the west pond & 6 more at the east pond)
(The others saw Great Blue Heron & Great Egret at places I couldn't get to)
Canada Goose (4-6)
Mallard (2)
Shoveler (13)
Blue Winged (6) & Green Winged (2) Teal
SORA (1-AD & 3 young)
COMMON GALLINULE (2, continuing adult & young)
Coots (19)
Sandhill Crane (H-2)
AVOCET (1, flew in late in my visit & was 1st seen by Diane H)
Killdeer (13-14)
Greater Yellowlegs (1)
(Others also saw a Lesser Yellowlegs)
Least Sandpiper (1, haven't seen one of these for a couple of weeks)
Pectoral Sandpiper (4)
STILT SANDPIPER (2)
Wilson's Snipe (1)
PEREGRINE (1, flew by after flushing all the shorebirds)
Rock Pigeon (1)
Mourning Dove (4, roadsides)
Blue Jay (H-2) & Crow (H-2)
Marsh Wren (2)
Tree (~20) & Barn (2) Swallows
AMERICAN PIPIT (2)
Savannah Sparrow (~20-25, most by the East Pond area)
Song (2) & Swamp (1) Sparrows
White Crowned Sparrow (4)
Red Winged Blackbird (20-25)
RUSTY BLACKBIRD (2, West Pond)
Goldfinch (6)
So 33 species at Muirhead for the day.
Bird-Of-The-Day will be the Avocet & Runners-Up will be the Peregrine,
the Pipits, the
Rusty Blackbirds & I guess the Gallinule family.
