to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
Started out at Muirhead Springs but spent so much time there trying to
see the shorebirds hidden in the vegetation that I had no time left to
do anything else. Just as well, as I seem to get tired quicker than I
used to.
Muirhead Springs (7:50-11:30 am)
West Pond
P.B. Grebe (4)
D.C. Cormorant (4 fly-bys)
Great Blue Heron (1)
Canada Goose (2)
Mallard (3), Blue Winged Teal (1-M) & Shoveler (1-M)
Coot (5)
Sandhill Crane (1 seen & 2 more heard)
Tree Swallow (4)
East Pond & Flooded Field to the west
Canada Goose (1)
Mallard (3), Blue Winged Teal (1-M) & Shoveler (1-M) (Just like at West Pond)
Virginia Rail (heard once)
Sora (heard several times)
Coot (1)
Killdeer (2)
Greater (2) & Lesser (10) Yellowlegs
Spotted Sandpiper (1)
Pectoral Sandpiper (4)
Dunlin (2)
Short Billed Dowitcher (16, may have been a Long Billed mixed in but I
did not see one)
WILSON'S PHALAROPE (1-PR &1-M)
Tree (6) & Barn (2) Swallows
Mourning Dove (flock of 20-25 flew in & landed in the wet field & disappeared)

Horned Lark (1 or 2 along Rohrsen Road)

Cooper's Hawk (1) & Bald Eagle (1-AD)
So 39 species at Muirhead plus roadside Pigeons for a day's total of 40.
Bird-Of-The-Day to the Wilson's Phalaropes & Runner-Up to all those Dowitchers.
