There's a fantastic article in the June 25 Times about remote sections of Colombia being opened up to birders and ecotourists after years of closures due to kidnappings and other guerrilla activities. Some of you may remember Illinois birder Louise Augustine, who was kidnapped along with her entire birding group and held for ransom. Thankfully, they were eventual!y released without harm.
According to the article, Colombia has 1,970 bird species, more than any other country in the world. There are crazy beautiful pictures of some of them. It's hard to believe such amazing creatures exist.
Finally, the Colombia field guide I posted a coup!e of weeks ago that my friend wanted to give away was quickly snatched up by a coup!e soon traveling to Colombia. Good for them!
