to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
Missed going here with Luis M so today I visited by myself. Hoped for
some early July shorebirds but had to settle for the resident Killdeer
& Spotted Sandpipers. Maybe next time.
Wood Dale Reservoir (7:20-10 am)
Reservoir Only
D.C. Cormorant (2)
Great Blue Heron (1)
Great Egret (3)
Canada Goose (79, young & old)
Wood Duck (5)
Mallard (17)
Killdeer (23)
Spotted Sandpiper (5)
Ringed Billed (5) & Herring (1) Gulls
Caspian Tern (6)
Tree (4) & Barn (4) Swallows
Middle Pond
D.C. Cormorant (2), Great Blue Heron (1) & Great Egret (1)
Itasca/Western Wetlands
This place is flooded with no mudflats. Only saw one female Mallard
with 5 young ones.
Land Birds
Mourning Dove (5)
Flicker (3-4)
Blue Jay (3) & Crow (H-1)
Chickadee (2) & House Wren (3)
Willow Flycatcher (1)
Yellow Warbler (2) & Common Yellowthroat (2)
Cardinal (4) & Indigo Bunting (2)
Song Sparrow (7-8)
Red Wings (18-20), Grackle (1) & Cowbird (1-M & 1-F)
Baltimore Oriole (1-M)
Goldfinch (4)
House Sparrow (4)
So 35 species at Wood Dale plus roadside Pigeons for a day's total of 36.
Not much to choose from but Bird-Of-The-Day will be the male Baltimore
Oriole as at least
it looks good. Runner-Up to the Caspian Terns which also look very nice.
