to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
Well this will be a very short report which is easy to do when you
mostly just travel chasing birds. Started by going to Yorkville Dam in
Kendall County with Andy Sigler. Arrived at about 9 a.m. to find Greg
J & Charlie (I think) already looking for the Vulture which had
already been seen at about 6:30 this morning. Eventually Andy picked
out the BLACK VULTURE in a tree with a Turkey Vulture & the 4 of us
had good looks in Andy's & Greg's scopes. Dan Williams arrived at
about 9:20 a.m. & just in time as by 9:25 a.m. the Black Vulture took
off, circled & flew off.
Then Andy, Dan & I headed to Dayton Dam in LaSalle County to look for
a Yellow Crowned Night Heron seen the previous day. It had been
reported here at 6:30 a.m. but we looked for 30 min & never saw it. We
were back to the cars & ready to leave when I spotted a Heron type
bird about half the size of the nearby Great Blue Herons. Got out the
scopes & had good looks at the young YELLOW CROWNED NIGHT HERON that
we all had figured we had missed. Never give up I guess!
Andy & I made a last stop at Lake DePue but except for a lot of Great
Egrets & a few Geese & Ring Billed Gulls we found nothing.
So only 15 species for the day but 2 of them were special ones.
Bird-Of-The-Day to the Black Vulture, seldom seen this far north &
Runner-Up to the young
Yellow Crowned Night Heron which normally would be the best bird for the day.
License Plate Of The Day to one from Wyoming seen on a Porsche on the way home.
