Remember Rachael Carson and “Silent Spring.”  She was dying of cancer when she was forced to defend her book against attacks by the powerful chemical industry.

Dear IBETers,

A favorite bird song of Rachel Carson was that of the diminutive thrush, the Veery. She loved to hear the sound of the Veery on her late afternoon walks along the paths of Rock Creek Park in Washington D.C. or on trails bordering the forests near her coastal Maine summer home. The flute like sound is like a small marble rolling down a thin metal tube.

Perhaps when you hear the sound of the Veery this spring you will remember with gratitude the prescient and courageous contributions made by Rachel Carson for a healthier balanced environment.

Thank you, I did not know that, and thank you for speaking about a woman.
