Eared Grebe used to be called Black-necked Grebe. For breeding plumaged birds, this is a much more descriptive name than Eared Grebe!

Black-necked Grebe is still called that in the Old World, I believe, just as the Horned Grebe is called the Slavonian Grebe there. Holarctic species often have the honour of being named a second time, when settlers 'rediscovered' them in North America.
