to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
Well another late report as I had to get up at 3:30 am to pick up Bob
Erickson at 4:45 & be at David Johnson's place at 5 am for the drive
to Emiquon's South Globe location. Made it in good time by 820 am.
Didn't get home until almost 7 pm & put in all my ebird reports but
didn't have enough energy left to do the IBET report so here it is a
day late.
Emiquon South Globe (8:20- 10:20 am)
Canada Goose (8) & Blue Winged Teal (2)
Golden Plover (~25), Killdeer (~30) & Semipalmated Plover (1)
HUDSONIAN GODWIT (1)
Short Billed (1) & Long Billed (2) Dowitchers
Wilson's Phalarope (2)
RED NECKED PHALAROPE (also 2)
Spotted (2) & Solitary (1) Sandpipers
Greater (15) & Lesser (~40) Yellowlegs
RED KNOT (1, only saw it as it was taking off but others saw it much better)
RUFF (1, good looks for as long as you liked)
Least (22), Semipalmated (2) & Pectoral (~45) Sandpipers
Stilt Sandpiper (~20, you see a lot more of these down here than you
do in the Chicago area)
Ring Billed Gull (no count)
Caspian (4) & Forster's (1) Terns
Little Blue Heron (1-IM) & Snowy Egret (8-10)
CATTLE EGRET (2)
Great Egret (21)
White Pelican (~40)
And a few common landbirds
Then to the North Globe section where there's a Barn Owl box which I
would never have known how to find by myself & I'm not supposed to say
where it is but I couldn't give directions even if I wanted to & I
don't want to. Saw the Barn Owl at a distance in the box using a scope
so as not to bother the Owl.
Eagle Bluff at Chautauqua (11:30-noon)
Just a short visit here to find the MARBLED GODWIT which was hard to
do as when we were there it was sleeping standing on one leg among the
ducks with its bill covered. Finally showed its big bill so we could
count the bird.
Near to the Godwit were 23 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 17 Golden Plovers & a few
common shorebirds. Also about 200 Ring Billed Gulls & 1 Caspian Tern.
Large numbers of Shovelers & Green Winged Teal & a few other ducks.
Our last stop was at the SWALLOW TAILED KITE spot near Towanda as
although David & I had already seen the Kite Bob E had not. Had to
look for a while but we finally did see it in flight.
So about 50 species for the day & I don't know how to choose a
Bird-Of-The-Day with so many great birds to pick from. So pick for
yourself from the 2 Godwits, the Ruff. the Red Necked Phalaropes, the
Cattle Egrets & the Barn Owl not to mention the Kite.
A wonderful day of birding & thanks go to Jen & Pete Fenner for
sharing their scopes with me as I was unable to cart mine in as I
couldn't get my wheelchair/walker past the heavy vegetation. Thanks
also to Bob & David for doing the same.
Had 18 species of shorebirds at South Globe & added 2 more at Eagle
Bluff for a shorebird total of 20 which I have not done for a long
time.
Interesting license plates seen were from New Hampshire, Utah & New Mexico.
