Hello Bird People,
Since I didn't see a report from Owen W from Techny North I decided
I'd better check on that place even though I don't usually stop there
until mid day. But I did Techny Basin 1st & while there Jeff B told me
that Owen had covered Techny North & had seen many shorebirds
including 3 STILT SANDPIPERS. So off I went & was able to see the
Stilts along with many other birders.
Techny Basin (8:10-9:05 am) (The only mudflats are the stream edges)
Great Blue Heron (2), Great Egret (2) & Green Heron (1)
Canada Goose (4-AD plus 1-PR with 4 more young)
Wood Duck (1-F with 10 small young)
Mallard (26, including 10 young)
Killdeer (2), Spotted (2) & Solitary (1) Sandpipers
Ring Billed Gull (1)
Pigeons (6) & Mourning Dove (2)
Willow Flycatcher (2) & Eastern Kingbird (1)
Barn (15) & Cliff (1) Swallows
Robin (5), Cedar Waxwing (1) & Starling (2)
Warbling Vireo (H-1)
Dickcissel (H-1)
Savannah (H-1) & Song (3) Sparrows
Red Wings (6)
Goldfinch (2)
Techny North (9:05-10:20 am)
Great Blue Heron (1) & Great Egret (2)
Mallard (1-F with 2 small young ones plus 6 adults)
Killdeer (14)
Lesser Yellowlegs (1)
Spotted (7) & Solitary (3) Sandpipers
Least (14) & Semipalmated (1) Sandpipers
Pectoral Sandpiper (1)
STILT SANDPIPERS (3-AD, all in breeding plumage)
Kestrel (1-M)
Caspian Terns (6)
Willow Flycatcher (H-1)
Barn Swallow (4, but Matthew had more swallow species)
Robins (4)
Warbling Vireo (H-1)
Savannah Sparrow (H-3)
House Finch (1-M) & Goldfinch (2)
House Sparrow (3)
So 34 species for the day at the two Techny's & Bird-Of-The-Day will
be the Stilt Sandpipers found by Owen W. Runners-Up to the Green
Heron, the baby Wood Ducks & my 1st Pectoral Sandpiper of the season.
Considering I hardly did any driving it was a pretty good day with 8
shorebird species.
