to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
Checked Montrose Beach to kill some time before we went South Pond to
look for the Least Bittern for Bob Erickson who needed it for his year
list.
Montrose Beach (6:45-8 am)
D.C. Cormorant (1)
Canada Goose (2)
Mallard (4-M)
Killdeer (6)
Piping Plover (2)
Spotted Sandpiper (2)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (1)
Dunlin(2, one being the oiled one)
Ring Billed (~175) & Herring (3) Gulls
Caspian Tern (6)
Purple Martin (4)
Tree (1), Bank (~25), Rough Winged (8) & Barn (1) Swallows
Robin (2) & Starling (3)
Red Wings (4) & Grackles (6)
House Sparrow (8)
And I heard one each Eastern Pewee & Warbling Vireo
South Pond (8:45-9:15 am)
Here we ran into Demond who gave us directions to the Bittern & the Rail.
Canada Goose (10-12) & Mallard (6)
LEAST BITTERN (1)
VIRGINIA RAIL (1)
Rock Pigeon (2)
Red Wings (4) & Grackles (6)
And we heard one Mourning Warbler near the Grant statue
We then spent about 45 min looking for a Yellow Crowned Night Heron
from outside the zoo on Stockton Drive but did not see any.
North Pond (10-10:25 am)
Black Crowned Night Heron (6)
Green Heron (2)
Canada Goose (~20) & Mallard (4)
Mourning Dove (2)
And the usual Robins & Blackbirds
So 27 species for the day with no roadside additions.
Bird-Of-The-Day will be at tie between the Least Bittern & the Virginia Rail.
Runners-Up to the few Montrose shorebirds.
