to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
As Bob Erickson had not seen the big Grebe at Saganashkee Slough
that's where we started. Arrived around 7:30 a.m. & were lucky as we
did see the RED NECKED GREBE & it was was pretty close & for about 10
min it got closer still. But then it started moving to the far shore
(south) & disappeared in the sun's glare. I can see why others had
trouble finding it later.
Saganashkee Slough (7:30-8 a.m.)
P.B. Grebe (6) & RED NECKED GREBE (1)
D.C. Cormorant (2)
Canada Goose (9)
Ring Necked Duck (1-PR), Red Breasted Merganser (4) & Ruddy Duck (11)
Ring Billed (10) & Herring (1) Gulls
Kingfisher (1, diving for food)
Blue Jays, many Robins, Starlings & 2 Red Wings
McGinnis Slough (8:15-9:30 a.m.)
Here we saw 7 puddle ducks & 2 diving ducks.

Great Blue Heron (5) & Great Egret (18)
Mallard (~25), Black Duck (1), G.W. Teal (~50), Gadwall (~30),
American Wigeon (~50)
Shoveler (15) & PINTAIL (~25, which is a lot of Pintail)
Ring Necked Duck (4-6) & CANVASBACK (1-M)
(And many ducks too far to identify)
Coots (400 or more)
Turkey Vulture (1), Red Tailed Hawk (1) & BALD EAGLE (1-IM)
Ring Billed Gull (2)
Chimney Swift (~20)
Blue Jays, Chickadees, Robins, Starlings, Cedar Waxwings, Palm &
Myrtle Warblers,
White Throated Sparrows, Red Wings & Goldfinch
For land birds we went to Sagawau Center (10-11:15 a.m.)
Sharp Shinned & Cooper's Hawks (1 each)
Red Bellied (2) & Downy (3) Woodpeckers
Blue Jay (4), Chickadee (2), Red Breasted Nuthatch (1) , White
Breasted Nuthatch (2),
Carolina Wren (H-1, looked hard but could not see it), Robins,
Starlings, Chipping Sparrow (1), Junco (8), Red Wings (10), Grackles
(4), House Finch (8), Goldfinch (6) & House Sparrow (6)
Techny North (by myself) (1:50-2:30 p.m.)

Great Blue (1)
Mallard (3) & Green Winged Teal (7)
Killdeer (14), Pectoral Sandpiper (1) & Snipe (2)
Crows (2)
Had a good day in that I had 52 species. And had 11 species of ducks
for the day.
Bird-Of-The-Day has to be the repeat Red Necked Grebe & Runners-Up can
be the Canvasback & all those Pintail.
License Plate Of The Day to one from Montana (the new white plate) &
we also saw one
from South Dakota.
