Hello Bird People,
Pretty cold start to the day but at least there wasn't much wind so I
tried Techny Basin followed by Techny North. Then after radiation I
did 2 local lakes in Des Plaines.
Techny Basin (8:15-10 a.m.)
HORNED GREBE (1, this is new for me at this site)
Great Blue Heron (1)
BLACK CROWNED NIGHT HERON (1-AD) (FOY)
Canada Goose (15) & Mallard (11)
Killdeer (4) & Snipe (1)
Ring Billed Gull (2)
Mourning Dove (5)
Flicker (H-1)
Blue Jay (2) & Crow (2)
RED BREASTED NUTHATCH (1, has been here all Winter)
Robin (24) & Starling (1)
Cardinal (4)
Song Sparrow (8) & Junco (1)
Red Wings (10) & Grackle (4)
House Finch (2) & Goldfinch (4)
House Sparrow (6)
Techny North (10:10-10:35 a.m.)
Canada Goose (2) & Mallard (6)
Green Winged Teal (28)
Killdeer (5)
PECTORAL SANDPIPER (1) (FOY)
Herring Gull (2-AD)
Robins, Song Sparrow, Red Wings & Grackle
Belleau Lake
This is another of the lakes that was closed for fish restocking but
today it had no Ducks, Loons or Grebes at all. Plenty of fishermen
though.
Axehead Lake (1:45-2:20 p.m.)
COMMON LOON (up to 3 from the 2 that have been here a while)
Great Egret (1, continuing)
Mallard (1-PR)
Lesser Scaup (5)
Bufflehead (1-M)
Red Breasted Merganser (48)
Pigeons (10)
Blue Jay (1) & Robins (10)
So 33 species for the day & Bird-Of-The-Day will be my new site bird
Horned Grebe.
Runners-Up to the Loons & my 2 new year birds the Night Heron & the
Pectoral Sandpiper plus the Red Breasted Nuthatch which I have seen
very few of this year.
