to IBET - Illinois Birders Exchanging Thoughts
Hello Bird People,
Well today begins several days of heat wave conditions so it will be
early starts for a while to beat the heat. Started at Paul
Douglas/Grassy Meadows where the restoration work continues but the
birds have not made a comeback that I could see. Llke last year there
were no Henslow's Sparrows nor Bobolinks & I didn't even find a
Savannah Sparrow. But it's a big place & it's possible they have just
moved to the northern sections where I can't get to as the
wheelchair/walker can't get through the tall grass. We will have to
leave those areas to be covered by more mobile folks.
Paul Douglas/Grassy Meadows (6:45-9 am)
In the far northern marsh where the Osprey nest is:
P.B. Grebe (6-8, includes young)

Wood Duck (8, includes young)
Mallard (~15, includes young)
Coots (2-AD with 2 young)
COMMON GALLINULE (1-AD, feeding while swimming)
Osprey (2-AD & 1 young at the nest platform)
Marsh Wren (3)
In the east marsh:
Great Blue Heron (1) & Great Egret (1)

Ring Billed Gull (1 fly-by)
Landbirds
Killdeer (1 fly-by)

Tree Swallow (8-10)
Blue Jay (2)
Robins (10) & Starlings (6)
Warbling Vireo (2) & Common Yellowthroat (2)
Cardinal (H-1)
DICKCISSEL (2, singing)
Song Sparrow (5)
Red Wings (~40), Grackles (4-6) & Cowbirds (2)
ORCHARD ORIOLE (1-AD-M, singing)
Goldfinch (4-6)
Baker's Lake from the Hillside Northern Overlook (9:35-10 am)
WHITE PELICAN (5-6)
D.C. Cormorant (~300)
Great Blue Heron (3)
Great Egret (~45)
Canada Goose (22)
Mallard (3)
Killdeer (7)
Ring Billed (3) & Herring (2) Gulls
Caspian Tern (19)
Blue Jay (1) & Red Wings (4)
And at the far south end of the lake the Osprey nest has one adult & 1
or 2 young ones.
So a total of 33 species for the day at my two sites with no roadside
additions.
Bird-Of-The-Day will be the adult Common Gallinule & Runners-Up will
be the Pelicans & the
singing Orchard Oriole.
