So I was out doing something in the yard and I heard the loud excited call of the kestrel and I was like oh my gosh so I ran to see if it was at the top of the tree and it was. And then it flew away not long after that as I was trying to get some pictures and I was like shoot!

So then I start doing some other stuff again and then it started calling excitedly so I ran back over to look for it and it was at the top of the tree and it was eating something and I was like “oh no!” because I’m always worried it’s gonna get my cardinals or any these predators will get my cardinals but it was something small that it finished in three or four bites and there were no feathers or feet so I think it was the one poor dragonfly I saw flying around earlier by itself.

After that it stayed at the top of the tall green spruce tree where it has died back, for probably a couple minutes or so and then it flew off and I didn’t see it again.

So if you like birds, which I think you do, hopefully you’ve planted some trees that will get nice and tall and allow all these birds to visit you too! They like these trees with perches at the top, so I think most dead trees or trees with dead branches are good, so hopefully people will consider leaving Imperfect trees or dead trees on their properties to help the birds.

I agree, my new neighbor has an arborist she deals with and any tree that's not perfect comes down, they think everything has to be perfect but nature is messy like my yard and it's going to stay wild and messy, lol, with only the invasives being taken out

Sounds nice!  I have a Hackberry but it’s only about 7 feet tall but I love it!  I see them in the forest all the time and the robins come through in the fall and eat the berries and then come poop the seeds here so I have lots of babies growing lol.

I think y’all would love my yard, it’s all kind of overgrown.  One of my neighbors hates it, she keeps trying to trim everything back.
The birds, on the other hand, love it. We have a 60 - 70’
Hackberry which the migrants can’t resist.

On the dead trees, I live in the Village of Homewood. If someone from the Village spots a dead tree or close to dead it's reported to the Village and you got a notice requiring that you remove it.  The reason given is safety from falling trees or large limbs. I'm speaking from experience.
