The other day, quietly resting on the ground with eyes closed only a few feet from the footpath, a bird sat motionless except for the gentle heaving as it breathed. Located outside the fencing of Montrose's water feature in the meadow, it posed a species I.D. puzzle, even causing us to wonder if it was a fledgling or sub-adult. Obviously its yellow-orange, black and white feathers gave a clue. All feathers were clumping together as if it had just bathed. It had pulled in its body as if to conserve heat. After several minutes on the ground it flew directly above its resting place to eye level and perched in a bush. It was motionless for several more minutes then with strong wingbeats flew to a nearby tree and preened in earnest for several more minutes. It then flew to the tree canopy stopping for several more minutes and winged away disappearing beyond the tree line. An abundance of my pix from the time it was on the ground until it flew away are at the hotlinnk below. Thanx for your I.D. help!
