A group of migrants from Banyuwangi in East Java have found a unique and colorful way to maintain solidarity and mark their presence in Bali.
They held a parade of ornamented eggs on carts they usually use to collect discarded goods.
Accompanied by the sounds of hadrah kuntulan, traditional Banyuwangi music, hundreds of participants pulled 24 carts loaded with adorned eggs.
Most earn a living by working as scavengers and garbage collectors.
On that Saturday, however, all of them donned their best attires.
The eggs were wrapped up in plastic and attached to palm leaf ribs.
The ribs were then connected to banana tree trunks and put inside the carts, which were decorated with colorful papers.
Pick-up vehicles, usually used to collect discarded goods bought from the scavengers, also enlivened the parade.
The parade started at 3 p.m, from Jl. Pulau Yoni in South Denpasar, passing through Jl. Pulau Bungin and Jl. Pulau Saelus, heading to Jl. Raya Sesetan and ended at Pegok Sesetan field.
The event, organized by Ikawangi Dewata — union of Banyu-wangi people living in Bali, was held in observance to the Maulid Nabi — the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, the day considered as a special moment for Banyuwangi people.
Leading the parade was a dragon-like ornament made out of gypsum, followed by the carts and pick-up cars.
The dragon is a special Banyuwangi symbol.
The event’s commitee member Lulut Joni Prasojo, said that the group always performed the tradition for Maulid Nabi, but not with as much fanfare as this year.
“This has been a long-held tradition, but this is the first time that we have held the event on so large a scale,” he said adding that they had used around 6,000 eggs for the event.
“We use eggs as a symbol of prosperity.”
