Time: Feb 9th at 9:00 am at IIFT, Delhi

Topic of Essay: English is the language of today and tomorrow... wrote a decent essay, there was an article in TOI on Feb 8th about English as a gobal language, based my essay on that...

Interview Panel: Panel III, p1, p2, p3, and me on the receiving end.

P1: So, Mr. Abhinav Sarangi? Do you know what a sarangi is?
Me: told, but was not very sure of my answer...(later checked that i was right)
P1: Of what material are the strings made of?
Me: Don't know, maybe Cu-based alloy...
P1: What are the properties required?
Me: Elasticity...
P2: What is elasticity?
Me: told.
P1: What is hardening, tempering, annealing, normalizing?
Me: tried to explain...
P1: Do it in layman's term?
Me: again explained along the same lines, removed technical terms like austenite, martensite etc.
P1: What is hardness? How is it measured?
Me: Explained well
P1: What is the difference between Rockwell and Brinell hardness testers?
Me: Explained in detail, including the mechanism.

It was going well till then, now the part bad started.

P1: Draw a curve for the cooling rate?
Me: clueless...
P2: Drew a graph and told me to write it's equation.
Me: told it is a^x.. then corrected myself and told.. it is a^(-x)
P2: Give an application of this curve
Me: The only thing that came to my mind, was an utility curve.

They murdered me on that... led me into a barrage of questions and basically proved that my economics knowledge is bad, at the very best. P2 left the room after this round.

P3: So, you have done a course on Industrial Sociology and an internship in HR dept of NTPC? What did you learn?
Me: Started with something
P3: How is it relevant?
Me: again some global gyaan on leadership in organizations... etc.
P3: What did you study in Sociology?
Me: Founding fathers...
P3: Who are?
Me: Told
P3: What did Max webber say?
Me: told about Bureaucracy...
P3: thank you (meanwhile P1 was looking at my certis, he saw a magazine.. told them i was the editor, hoping for a few questions... but nothing doing... he saw another magazine, told one of my stories appeared in that...n that my hobby is writing...)
P3: Which authors do you read? (taking pity on me)
Me: Dostoevsky, Franz Kafka, Orhan Pamuk,, and short stories of Anton Chekhov, O.Henry
P1: (handing me back my file) Take a chocolate.

Overall had a bad feeling about the interview, they seemed to laugh at my answers as if i did not know anything, or was using terms which i don't really understand... though the laugh was friendly most of the times, sometimes had a feeling that they were being sarcastic.
Anyways.. have to move on to C and B interviews and have to do them well... nw that A seems to be slipping away, with a goa trip in between..
Seniors, plz comment.

Just take a chill pill.. Seems pretty fine to me, moreover a couple of hiccups here and there are necessary else the panel doesnt feel victorious :)

One of my friends in A had just a 10 min interview and after the interview, he got a feel that his interview was too muted and panel hardly asked any questions. But there he is..

So, just enjoy..

was the first one to be interviewed

P3 - wat all subjects are u studyin this sem
me - told also mentioned BTP
P3 - wat is ur BTP
me - told
P3 - u are studying RAC twice?
me - first one was basics and this sem it is system design
P3 - can u draw the thermodynamic cycle
me - drew vapour compression cycle
P3 - explain
me - started but was frequently interupted
P3 - asked wat is the enthalpy change in process 3-4
me - told I wud need data from tables
P3  - assume water as refrigerant and then tell
me - sir i cant tell u exact value but can tel u how to calculate
P3 - u have studied 2 courses u dnt know values... use conditions from ur home refrigerator
me - told them again that after assuming some operating temp. also i would need entropy and enthalpy data
P3 - where is compressor in the refrigerator
me- sir u can't see it in modern refrigerators but the humming sound is beacuse of that
P3 - no where is it?
me- sir its at the back and bottom
P3 - asked bout isentropic process
me - told and derived some equations which he wantd
got a little confused but asked for a moment to recollect and answered and said I was a little confused erlier
P2 - wat is a constant velocity joint w.r.t. automobiles
me -(have never heard of it) sir i dont know
P2- dnt give up, thnk of sumthing
me - said cant really recollect but if u tell me where it is used in automobiles i probably know of it by some other name
P2 - said sumwhere near wheels
me- still cudnt tell but said according to me axles probably employ this and gave some fundae
P2 - front wheel drives and rear wheel drives?
me - told but he said this everybody knows....answer like a mech engg. (WTF itna hi pata hota hai mech engg ko bhi)
P2 - integration ka kya use hai in actual life not calculating area
me- said we can calculate failiure probablity in industry, if we know distribution functions then we can calculate failure rates and all, we are studying this in a course this semester
P1 - what is social structure?
me -said sumthing but was told this is society but what is the structure

I havnt been asked extra-curriculars/hobbies in any of the interviews so far(only C is left now). Though I was kinda expectin emphasis on acads, but not once has football been discussed :(
either they have accepted that my hobbies are genuine(which is good rite?) or they have decided to corner me on acads.

CAT: 99.92
Anyth Special: Flunked 2 years in maah B.Tech.

Date: 11/3/08
Centre: IIFT, New Delhi
Time: 9 am slot.

Essay topic: Computers ll rule the world.
Essay was ok, i had loads of data in this field, n i think did a decent job
I took a stand against the topic, wrote bout kasparov n deep blue being separated by only 1 game, n programmers were allowed 2 intervene b/w the matched. defined Turing test n told that no machine been able to pass it till date, even mentioned Isaac Asimov's name.

PI: (i wanted them to ask me something based on my essay, Alan Turing/chess/Asimov, alas they dint)
3 profs->
P1->French Beard.(who was really angry with me )
P2->Old Prof(speaks slowly but clearly, good prof)
P3-> he was almost an observer(i guess P1 had already Vetoed my admission , thats Y he was not passed on the baton )

Time: around 15 minutes

me: Ankit Kapoor/ Captain.

P2(the aged prof) started some chit chat, then he asked me my Engg Discipline, i was afraid he was about to ask me some electronics transistors et al fundae.
P2: what kinds of mouses are there
me: wheel mouse& Optical/Laser mouse. Adding ki Wheel mouse to archaic hota hai(as was advised by coaching guys not to give crisp answers )
P2: how do u think these mouses work. tell me about wheel mouse first
me: (who had no clue ofcourse, told him so)
P2: ofcourse u are not expected to know all the stuff, but i would like u to think. (Nice friendly guy )
I gave some normal fundae, like Translation of the wheel's motion on the screen. Synchronisation of the origin . P2 kept telling me its too "Gross"(i guess as in Generic ) statement, n i should answer it as an engineer.
me; sir wheel mopuse ka rotation Continuous hota hai, to the input is an analog input.
p2: right, but i m not statisfied.
me: told him something about the cartesian coordinates on the screen, he said he is not satisfied.
then he went to some other Question.

P2: Light is travelling from 1 medium to another, it gets refracted.
me: told them u(supposed to be "nu" ) sin theta produce is contsant, its the snell's law.
(I guess They asked me this Qstn coz of Phy Olympiad mentioned on my data from )
P2: Y does this happens
me: told him that light has a tendency to follow the Least time path.
P2: okie, now knowing this p roperty, can u derive snell's law for me.
me: (its not any difficult thing, but i was worried that its equal to a million dollar Qsdtn for me )
I wrote the total time Eqn, he asked my paper to verify. Then i glanced @ P3 trying to push my file towards him, P3 gestured that i should hand over this to P1(the evil prof) ), now i desperately want them to open my file.. it has got a real good extra curric certis, which can be my saving grace)
P2: handing back thge paper, well this equation is correct, now what ll u do.
me: differentiate it(what else) to minimise.
Now Sin theta was coming in denominator in my eqn, so i crossed out my original d1.. But nice helping prof said ki he dont see any problem with my "d1", nice guy
i was thinking sth, then finally i told them ki total displacement is contsant, n wrote the eqns X axis total distances == cinstant 1, Y axis Total distance ==contsant2.
P2: Good Observation , now what ll u do.
me: sir i can differentiate it to eliminate variables, the derivative of a contsant is zero.
i was doing the maths, when p2 Interrupted me that i m correct , n theek hai, leave it.

N then the mega-downfall started(which was expected)
The maxim given to me by coaching guys was Never ever to blame the system(the IIT education system), so was trying to defend on the lines->
(i) Flunked coz used to play age of empires n was addicted to it to some extent(data from mentions that represented india in aoe nations cup)
(ii) Now I have become a "good boy" , getting good scores in the last series of exams which were conducted.
P1 said where r the mark sheet, i toild him noi separate mark sheets but i can get the lettrs from the prof.
(iii) I Studied Diligilently for CAT (backing my abilities with HArd work n dedication)
(iv) willingness to work hard, thats Y wrote cat, 'd already suffered setbacxk in career, learnt my lesson in a very bitter way... (i know sounds corny n
cliche ' )
(v) Priorities in life.. motivation level , took me this much time to get my life back on track.. n dont know what all Filmy Stuff...
n P1 was too damm Furious looking at my profile that, n it was getting difficult to me remain calm n think properly...

They were not at all convinced
I could/Should/Must have added more phattes, coz i so much dint wanna miss A
n P1 landed the Killer Blow during this conversation..
me: sir, all the time i had spent outside the classroom had not gone to waste, i also happen to represent IIT Roorkee at All Asia level programming contests.. blah ..blah.. @IIT Kanpur(they were not touching my excellent extra curricu/or hobbies)
P1: u joined IIT Roorkee to sit back n study, not to go n do some gimmick @ Kanpur.
I i guess this sealed off my fate
i guess i had already mentioned sth about settin up priorities in life.
P2: thansk for coming for the i/view(as if i m doing him a great favour, sirr thanks to u)take a toffee.

Topic of Essay: Computer will rule the world in future.
basically wrote bout how fast computers have become, mentioned about
charles babbage computing machine finished with saying that computer
ruling is not possible since it is ultimately a silicon device with no
emotions and thinking of its own..

Interview Panel: Panel I, p1, p2, p3
was the fiftht one to be interviewed

P1 - OK Gaurav what is your name??
me - I got confuesd.
P1 - I mean wat does "Kochar" stands for?
me - told them that my ancestors belong to Lahore in punjab and we
are punjabis..
P1 - So does "Kochar" signifies some city or a village?
me - No ,sir.
P1- So why was India divided??
me - told them that Jinnah was in favor of it.He felt that Muslims
would be oppressed in the country since it is Hindu dominated..
P1 -What kind of domination?
me - said demographically,Hindus were in majority
P1 - asked who were ruling India??
me - i said princely states were there, but Britishers were the main
power.
P1 - before Britishers?
me - Mughals
P1 - So if Mughals ruled india before Britishers, then how come Muslims
were oppressed?
me - said sir i feel oppressed is not the right word, but a large
portion of Muslims was illiterate and their living standard was low as
compared to other castes, also jinnah had his own prime-ministerial
ambitions which were not likely to be fulfilled in india without
partition.
P1 - Have u heard about some property dispute in Mumbai?
me- I said it was ancestral property of jinnah and there was
controversy regarding ownership of it.i remember this much only sir..
P1 - Why Pakistan and India are not good frnds?
me- I said India was hurt by what pakistan did in 1948 and also
imperialistic ambitions of ruling class of pakistan during early days
after independence caused tension.Told smthing abt Kashmir and said
britishers gave choice to princely states to join either of the two
countries and ruler of Kashmir was not willing but later on joined
india
P1 - what other states were not willing?
me - tld abt Nizam of hyderabad and Kashmir.told smthing abt goa
P1 - Goa was not a princely state.
me -I agreed
P1- Tell me smthing more about jinnah
me - said he was a upper society man,did law from oxford and was
highly ambitious
P1 - He joined congress right??
me- said yes ,sir initially then he moved to muslim league.
P1 - Do you know some pakistan PM had relations with a indian village?
me - I said Julfikar bhutto
P1 - (laughed)so u seem to like bhutto?
me- said i have read an article about his ancestors lived in a village
in indian punjab.
P1 - Punjab???? are u sure?
me -said yes
P2 - india's or pakistan's?
me - India's.
P2 Bhutto was a sindhi or punjabi??
me - said sindhi
P2 - So how come punjab??
me - said before partition sindhis and pathans also lived in
punjab.but now bhuttos have moved to larkava.
P2 - What?? repeat..
me-said its Larkana..P2 seemed satisfied..
P2 -So where is sindh in pakistan??
me -I said region around karachi is sindh..
P1 - So sindh is in karachi?
me - no sir, karachi is in sindh..P1 laughed
p2 -so gaurav u r from electronics ,fresher,so tell me how does flat
screen works?
me-told them its is LCD(liquid crystal display) through TFT(thin film
transistor).
p2-so ??
me- sir whenever electron beam strikes the surface that particular
transistor conducts.
pr-so what happens due to it?
me-said there is a layer of phosphor over it whenever current pass
throught it ,it glows told him about
light retention property of phosphorous and refresh rate
p2-ok,so how plasma tv works?
me-sir ,i am not aware of this technology.
p2-so how does this touch-screen mobile works?
me-sir,i havnt done a course on it,but i guess there must be a sensor
there that..
p2-what sensor??
me-peizoelectric crystal.it generates current when pressure is applied
on it.
p2-what happens inside it?
me-sir i havnt read about its inner details,i just know it generates
current on applying pressure
p2-but u must have read about it.
me-i said i think since electron when move in a particular direction
then they generate current, otherwise their random motion
cancels out and net momentum is zero.so molecules inside peizoelectric
crystla may orient themselves in such a way that make electron flow in
a particualr direction
on applying pressure.so current is generated
p2-so electrons have momentum?
me-yes sir
p2-what is the velocity of electron?
me-3*10^8 m/s
p2-(shocked) what??
me-i sensed it and said it is the maximum velocity that they can
attain
p2-still surprised
me-sir their actual velocity depends on the electric field applied
told them I=ANeV.
p2-what is V?
me-told him about formula of V.wrote it on a paper.
p2- is this e ,natural base of log??
me- said no sir it is the charge of electron, told its value.
p2- so hav u heard abt e(log wala0?
me- said yes sir it is 2.718.
p2-what is so special abt it?
me-clueless ,thinking abt it
p2-what is e^x??
me-told him series.
p2-what is it derivative?
me-asked paper for it,hellll.. i was differentiating the series.nyway
i said it is x*e^x.
p2-what??
me- i said no it is e^x.said it was just a slip of tongue.
p2-so what does it signify?
me-sir area under curve..
p2-no integration,differentian i mean,
me-told him abt slope.
p2(satisfied)-so it value give u the slope of curve.
me- i said yes.
p2-said i m over to p3.
p3-so gaurav dou hav a cell phone??
me-yes sir
p3-so how many users do u think that are being added each year?
me-gave some arbit number
p3-(laughed )doesnt matter leave it.so why mobiles are becoming so
popular?
me-sir easy to get a connection,flexible.
p3-wat abt landline?
me-sir declining,not that easy to get a connection,people getting
their land-line connections cut .
mentioned smthing abt BSNL.
p3-BSNL? so wat does BSNL stands for?
me-told
p3-so which body was there before BSNL?
me-P&T
p3-smiled and said okay P&T,then wat happened to P&T.
me-sir BSNL and VSNL were formed out of it.
p3-so if mobile is so good, then y it came late to india.
me-sir technology came in late 80's to USA and europe, around early
nineties it developed significanlty and around 1998 it came to india
so it is not that late.
also one reason cud be that mobile phones are difficult to track and
gave some terrorism and ID card funda.
p3-u said landline not easy to get ,u hv to stand in lines y so?
me-sir mainly 2 reasons
1) establishing landline connections involves setting dedicated
hardware.
2) govt officials were inefficient due to lack of competition.
p3-wat role does BSNL play in mobile world?
me-largest GSM service provider(dnt know its correct or not).he
frowned a bit,and then added that it is so because BSNL already hv
infrastructure in place so
that working to it advantage ,other are also catching up fast..
p3-then said i m over to P1
p1-asked abt trek to dhoditaal
me-told
p1-tell me name of some peaks..
me-told abt K2,kanchenjunga some other too
p1-wat about shivalik?
me-told them

thank you gaurav.. and take one candy.
and thats it..
Seniors & friends, suggestions/comments/feedback is welcomed.

Hey, seniors/juniors :p
C is the only chance left for me, n its so damm bad that A profs told
me that they r not convinced.. N that evil prof was so upset n
upsettin, askin questions like how old r u? Have u graduated? First of
all, tell me any guy is there in ur college with this profile? N then
plz give me his phone no jaldi. Do u think its ok to go offensive,
when evil prof said ki he is not convinced, the thought that came2 my
mind was to tell him that it should not be taken as a stigma attached
to me.. I m supposed to sound apologetic, but guess after this
debacle, i ll b little on the offensive side during C, that i wont
stake my 2 years etc etc. All advice r welcome, no strings attached.
Lets C:)

Hey dude,

Nice interview. Somehow, your interviews seem to be going exactly the
same way as mine went (seriously!)
Lemme keep the feedback short:
1. Good work with the "tech" part - all meta. stuff answered - Perfect
start. stage 1 cleared.
2. Good job with the sociology stuff as well. I guess the prof was
from the OB area, hence the particular interest.
3. About the middle part regarding utility curves and all, you are not
expected to know much of economics. We are supposed to learn all this
in the 1st term here.
So unless you stated economics as an interest/strength area or you
took the kulshrestha wala elective and they noticed it, No issues
absolutely.
4. They didnt ask you abt the authors you mentioned could imply that
either they knew little abt them (which is doubtful given the varied
interests of these ppl) or they had made up their mind (to take you
ofcourse) at that stage.

I'm just curious who were the people in your interview. Was it this
guy:
http://www.iimahd.ernet.in/faculty/facultydetails.php?id=231

Also in ur free time, just flip thru the faculty profiles and see if
you can spot your panel. Will be good to interact with them once you
get here [;)]

Cheers,
Rahul.

Oye Sasha,

You did well though I'm a wee bit disappointed that they didnt ask abt
your extra currics. I had the same feeling after my interview. It
lasted 25 mins out of which 17-18 mins was BTP and rest was random
questions abt metals in everyday life etc. Basically, nothing that I
was confident of: No sports, no debating, no books nothing. i guess
they have their own way of judging people.
Coming to your interview: The question on social structure would
attract globe answers from anyone in the world. So, dont be too
worried on that front.
I also dont think the lack of knowledge on politics would be their
reason to reject a good candidate.

Chill out and have fun now that most of your interviews are over.

Cheers,
Rahul

O Captain My Captain [:D]

Good work. At the very outset, I believe these people are mature
enough not to make on-the-spot judgement calls on what anyone has
(not) done in life. Prolly, they just wanted to see if you could
retain your cool after they put it so bluntly to you. From your
account of the thing, it seems fine.
The snell's law part was especially nice. These people become really
happy if someone can remember something they learnt way back in
school. It was good that you didnt put it down as if u had mugged it
sometime but worked thru to the result. Nice :)

My guess is you'll make it.

Cheers,
Rahul

Hey Kochar,

Awesome work. You hit it off with them right in the beginning with the
Indo-Pak stuff. Its always nice to have your core competency being
tested first up.
Everyone seems to be doing well at the acads part this time, so thts
great. Apart from the two small slip ups - velocity of electron and
diff. of e^x...rest was near perfect.
Basically, you can start packing your bags now [:D]

Cheers,
Rahul

P.S. largest GSM service provider is Bharti. BSNL, I think, is a
close second with Vodafone marginally behind
About its role, Because of it having infra in place, it may become
more influential as the tower sharing agreements get finalised.

and yeah....Junagarh was the third princely state not willing to join
either India or Pak.

I guess there was one guy from Bihar (some IIT Kgp guy i suppose) who joined IIM cal and then left after a sem coz he didnt like the MBA course...went to china to start some business with his friends and came back midway, again wrote cat and got thru IIMC...the prof who had interviewed him in the first yr interviewed him again and he assured him that he will not run away again  ;)

And he must be there in IIMC second yr... I have heard this story from multiple sources and verified from my cousin@IIMC

May be IIMC junta can get u his contact details.

else, my advice...just be cool about it and assure them that you would not like to mess up now...u have learnt your lesson...blah blah
shd be fine

Good luck

A panels to bahut hi acche n systematic the.. Majority of their interviews were like-> 1 prof asking acads, 2nd prof asking extra curriculars, n 3rd prof asking general world affairs.. n generally no1 intruding into others territory.
mera panel to bahut hi accha tha, Both of the questions they asked me(Wheel mouse and snell's law) were good. a li'l tough to answer in front of interview panel, but also manageable.
n they ofcourse dint ask any tech fundaes from a 5 pointer:)
but that P1 in my pnael was a very battameez/upsetting prof..
let me give u some memorable quotes:)

me: ...... n i m more than willing to work hard for this.. n i also have the potential n capability for hard work.. blah blah... like Jee top 0.5% in the past.
P1: thats the exact point, u scored this much rank in Jee.. n ..
me: (rote memory:) ) Sir, i wasnt very pro-active when the stream was being decided for me after class XII, but to pursue an MBA is a very conscious choice n ...
P1: Accha, how old were u?? How old are u??(battameez :X ) have u graduated?? [Form par likha to hai ki nahin, phir?]
me: sir i ll completing all the requirements in may..
P1: but there must be spillovers form all the previous years.. all i can see is E s and F s in the gradesheets...
(abe what else do u expect in a 6 year BTech Gradesheet, if u expect anyth else, thats ur fault, i was trying to push my file towards him all the while, but he never opened it n all the time was indulged in browsing through those stupid gradesheets photocopies)
Whats he difference b/w E&F..
me: arre kucch nahin hota, sirf stndr deviation ka difference hota hai.
P1: whats W?? (that Ankush Mittal 'd given me a W for some reason)
Me: W for withdrawal...
P1 was really really upset seeing the last gradesheet.. kept telling me about computer games n all..

...blah blah..I guess A is not gonna gimme a call, n i m not going for I/K, so C is the only place left.. any official dates when results gonna be out??

waise... i forgot to post my IIMA experience... so here goes...

Article Writing: Business: Law v/s Ethics. I wrote whatever crap i could think about... competition, customer focus, balancing profits blah blah... also wrote that Ethics were more like conscience. Laws are there to preserve competition and to protect consumer interest. blah blah blah

Interview: 20 Min (tops)

Panel:

1. Intelligent Smart Bearded Guy: SBG - Later found that he was a Gen Mgt prof.
2. Strong Silent type Math Guy: SSTM
3. Cool Young type Cheerful Guy: CG - Later checked his profile - was some prof of Agricultural Business or something.

4. Me

SBG: Prithweesh please be seated. <happily!>

Me: Thank you sir! <reciprocating the happiness>

CG: Can I look at your certificates?

Me: <hand over the certis>

SBG: Tell me? why are you not working in your core area?

Me: <totally flummoxed??> Sir?? I am a CHEMICAL ENGINEER.

CG: He IS a chemical engineer <simultaneously>

SBG: oh ok. So... tell me... how does one make Caustic Soda?

Me: sir, soda is made by a process known as the Solvay Process. Sodium Carbonate is...

SBG: Sodium Carbonate is not Caustic Soda...

Me: I'm sorry sir, NaOH is made by a process known as the Castner Kellner Solvay process. It involves reaction of Soda Carb or Sodium Chloride making NaOH... Start making the diagram of the cell to illustrate how it works...

SBG: what is the reaction??

Me: I am getting to that sir... there are 3 reactions going on... NaCl -> Na+ Cl-....

SBG: NO... what is the overall reaction?

Me: NaCl + H2O -> NaOH + HCl?

SBG: IS there chlorine formed?

Me: Yes sir, i was getting to that... the HCl formed can also be written as H2 + Cl2 after electrolysis is complete...

SBG: so say it this way na... Electrolysis of NaCl soln..

SBG: See, you are too fast...Understand the question, THINK before you answer... <laughs all around>

Me: <WTF?????> yes sir, it IS electrolysis of NaCl

SBG: ok... so tell me? why are there PVC plants near Soda plants???

Me: because chlorine is a raw material required for manufacturing Vinyl Chloride by reacting ethylene and Chlorine, which, in turn is used to manufacture PVC, they place the plants close to NaOH plants to decrease costs. (standard XII class question :))

SBG: Tell me, what is Cement?

Me: cement is calcium silicate, formed from CaO or CaOH when it reacts with SiO2 (sand)...

SBG: Then? why is water added to reaction??

Me: Sir, it's added as a medium, and to account for water of crystallization.

SBG: why can't Oil be used??

Me: sir, Oil doesn't react with CaO to give CaOH... oil doesn't have water...

SBG: oil has C H O??

Me: {is he joking???} OIL has C H and traces of O... moreover the covalent bond energy of C-O is very high... it can't be broken that easily to give H2O...

SBG: but OIL has Hydrocarbons?? they have O?

Me: NO Sir... oil has oxygen as alcohols, not as free water... moreover CARBOHYDRATES have CHO...

SBG: {not convinced} ok never mind... tell me, you know of the mahabharata??

Me: yes sir, i'm aware of it in general...

SBG: Who is the eldest character in Mahabharata??

Me: SIr, it could be Hanumana?? he was supposed to have witnessed the whole battle... and surmising he was born in the previous yuga, i guess he's the oldest...
{all three profs start laughing like hyenas very derisively}

SBG: No No, among the main characters...

Me: among the main characters, it would have to be Bhisma Pitamah...

SBG: what is the relation between bhisma and arjuna?

Me: They don't share a blood relation, because of bhisma's oath and eventualities...

SBG: what was his oath?

Me: he swore an oath never to bear children... {to stake claim on the throne} was cut off before i finished...

All three start laughing like crazy again... i am perplexed

CG: don't you mean NEVER to get married??

Me: no sir, i don't think marriage is a pre-requisite to having kids???

All three start off again... keep laughing for quite some time...

SSTM: Prithweesh, have you studied Maths?

Me: yes sir, a little.

SSTM: what have you studied?

Me: <completely taken off guard, but thinking that he'd grill me hard if i made the worng move, i played dumb> sir?????

SSTM: <realizing that it was too general a question i presume> have you studied Algebra, geometry Statistics etc.

Me: YES sir, we had subjects covering these topics.

SBG: Sir, they have Advanced Maths.

Me: <ummm????> yes, we had 3 courses of math in college

SSTM: Ok... have you learnt geometry??

Me: yes sir :)

SSTM: draw the diagram of a Rectangular Hyperbola

Me: scribble scribble - y=1/x graph

SSTM: Very GOOD... < too cheerfully for comfort>

SSTM: tell me the equation of the graph you just drew...

Me: y = c/x

SSTM: oh... and C is a constant??

Me: yes sir, in this graph it has to be positive.

SSTM: ok... draw a graph of a curve which has one point where the first derivative is 0 and one point where second derivative is 0.

Me: scribble scribble - graph of y=sin x...

Me: point of inflexion - 2nd derivative = 0... local maxima - 1st derivative = 0

SSTM: very good... now tell me the equation of this graph...

Me: y = sin x

SSTM: is there an algebraic expression with the same property??

Me: yes sir, y = x x-1 x-2...

SSTM: < again too cheerfully for comfort> good...

SSTM: Have you studied Statistics?

Me: not as such, but we used a bit of it in practicals.

SSTM: correlation regresssion???

Me: yes sir, regression, but correlation, only theoretically...

SSTM: what is correlation?

Me: the link between two parameters, how they rise or fall together .... blah blah globe...

SSTM: so you're basically saying Associativity??

Me: yes sir.

CG: you said Parameter and Variable (i said that)... what is the difference???

Me: umm... (tried to give a roundabout answer)... sir, a parameter can also be used to define variables... talking about Parametric froms of equations... blah blah...

CG: write this down... y=ax2 + bx + c... what is the variable? what is the parameter???

Me: confused... sir, X is the independent variable, y is the dependent variable... parametersssss....

CG: (giving me a break) what are a, b, c???

Me: Sir, they can be called parameters because they define the shape of the graph....

SSTM: have you read matrics??<very softly>

Me: I beg your pardon? < i heard metric?>

SSTM: MATRICES

Me: OHHH... Yes sir

SSTM: what is  matrix?

Me: it is a rectangular arrangement of entities or points <draw a 4x3 matrix> unfortunately call it a 3x4 matrix...

SSTM: Rectangular?? can they not be Square???

Me: A Square is ALSO a rectangle sir...

<All three start laughing>

SSTM: 3x4??? you mention the number of columns first???

Me: im sorry sir, it is a 4x3 matrix...

SSTM: what is a determinant? what would be the determinant of this matrix you have drawn...<i had drawn a 4x3 matrix>

Me: No sir, a determinant can only be calculated for a square matrix... < try to start defining a determinant> am cut short...

SSTM: what is the rank of a Matrix?

Me: THe rank of a matrix is the number of NON ZERO rows if we convert it to an upper triangle matrix using... <cut off before i could say elementary row transformations>

SSTM: then what is the maximum rank of this matrix???

Me:???? sir, i have to calculate... there is ONLY one rank of a matrix...

SSTM: no no... you don't understand... what is the maximum rank of this matrix??

Me: ??? sir, i have to do Elementary Row Transformations to find out the numver of non zero rows...

SSTM: Elementary Row Transformations???

Me: <:o :o :o>

CG: what do you know about these terms? write them down... G5, G8, OECD, BRIC

Me: starting off with BRIC, it is an informal grouping to refer to emerging economies, Brazil, India Russia and China... CG tries to kick my ass and says, Informal??? I say: I mean to say that there is no Organization called BRIC, they are normally referred to as a group... These economies have shown a lot of growth over the past few years...<cut off again>

CG: what is OPEC?

Me: <could only get to the full form of OPEC before was cut off again>

CG: what is SAARC?

Me: SAARC is <again cut off just after i got to the full form>

CG: can you name 3 members of SAARC...

Me: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka...

CG: what are the G8 then?

Me: G8 are the group of industrialized countries

CG: can you name them?

Me: Italy, Germany, France, US, UK, Canada, Japan, Russia...

CG: hmm...

CG: what is G5 then??

Me: totally screwing up all the good work... India... (the biggest blunder of my life)

<Laughter all around> <lasts for about 10 - 15 seconds>

Me: umm...

CG: never mind... you're in pharmaceuticals... tell me the patent problem that is happening in india???

Me: Start off by saying india had a Product patent scheme before 1970's... then it changed to a process patent... explained the reasons behind it... the growth of generic players... then came WTO... talked about the example of Lipitor, which is the worlds biggest selling pharma and how Dr. Reddy's has managed to copy it for no significant investment, and is able to provide it at cheap prices... there was some small talk about copying versus common bakwaas etc... blah blah blah...

SBG: oh... and what is Lipitor?? what does it do??

Me: it is a lipid blocker... decreases blood pressure and allied problems...

SBG: does it decrease BP??

Me: no sir, it decreases cholesterol, and AS a result decreases BP and heart problems...

SBG: who makes Lipitor, Ranbaxy or Cipla?

Me: Pfizer sir...

CG: hmm... continue...

Me: go on to explain the new patent scheme...

SBG: so... Lipitor won't be produced??

Me: no sir, it only applies to patents granted after 2005... Atorvastatin Calcium, the ingredient in Lipitor will not be applicable for protection, because it was patented before that time.

SBG: SSMT and CG look at each other... say... Thank you prithweesh, and take a toffee...

Sounds good:)
they must be happy with the maths also:)
A kinda crazy interview:)
I guess The maximum rank for the matrix can be 3.. (the samller of rows/columns)
N the oldest main character in the mahabharta can be 1 of the chiranjeevis/immortals(hehehe), like ashwathama can now be lurking somewhere in the jungles of africa. But obviously Bheeshma is the correct answer..

I wonder how/ when they will grade the essay??
I want marks for my essay! were they supposed to grade it before/during the interview.. because i know they took some 15 mints before calling me in, (n thats Y Snell's law qstn for me, coz my 1st co-curricular achievement was Phy Olympiad)

I think they did a little bit of research before they asked questions... I have been asked about questions related to patents and the like in ALL interviews... i don't know why ALL of them asked questions regarding that part... sadly, i had to give very general answers to all of them... Rank waala bit i got totally confused... he didn't ask me the question in that way... he was very confusing when he asked... kept wavering from what is rank to how to calculate rank to whatever... which is why i didn't answer properly i guess...

I didn't think before answering hanuman... thought i'd be able to pull a fast one on them profs.. :D...
