progress bar

hey
i want to design a progress bar.
i have say 20 steps in the complete process.
the time of execution of different steps may vary
suggest how can we make it robust .......such that the progress bar is
steady and continuous

i think for dynamic progressbars, u shud check some javascript libraries...
