Dear Friends,

As I am leaving this wonderful place IIT Madras, our home away from home, I feel nostalgic. I wish I could go back in time, not to change anything but to do it all over again (quote from one of my t-shirts).

It gives me immense pleasure in writing about my four year Undergraduate experience. It all started off with the JEE wherein I was only able to secure a seat in Metallurgy and Materials Science at IIT Madras. I was very much interested in pursuing Chemical Engineering from IITM  without even knowing what it meant (back then and even now :P). As luck would have it,  I managed to get a branch change to ChemE and become the last name on Roll. The initial few courses were tough to comprehend but somehow I got used to them and did pretty well. My biggest regret till now is not knowing hindi since I wasn't able to get Panda Sir`s jokes ( and dint understand Navjot Singh Sidhu's hindi cricket commentary). Then came my second year internship, where I had to travel nearly 30 km from my home only to be seated in a sofa all through the day with no fan or AC in Chennai 's sweltering heat and reading the plant manuals. That's when I realized how tough it is to become a chemical engineer ( probably you all must have also realized it since most of you are taking up Non Core jobs). As soon as the second year intern ended, the interviews for the third year intern started. It was really difficult to manage time and for the first time I had to wear formals. After getting rejected by a few companies, I realized how not to talk in interviews( the interview was going on well and the R&D head started to proclaim that his company's brands are the best to which I asked if he was also the marketing head of the company. I thought it was witty/funny, apparently it wasn't :P). Apart from academics, I had the opportunity to learn a lot of life skills, which I hope would keep me in good stead in the days to come. I learnt to operate an ATM card ( Back then, I had entered a mobile number as the pin since I was not aware that it was only 4 digits :P ). My proudest moment through the four years is that neither have I asked anyone to put proxy for me nor have I proxied for anyone else and still managed to have an attendance of above 85 % in all courses including Professional Ethics :P. Having narrated my experiences - the good, bad and ugly, now is the time for some free advice( which I intend to follow). Just because we have or will be getting (Dual  junta :P) an IIT degree doesn't mean we know it all, there are always people from other colleges or even people without formal education who are far more intelligent and hard working so let us respect everyone equally. Finally I would like to conclude with a dialogue which I adore from my favourite Rajinikanth film, " Kashta padama ethuvum kedaikathu, Kashta padama kedaikurathu ennakume nelaikathu" which means "If you manage to get something without working hard for it, it won't last forever".

I wish each and everyone of you the best in your careers and hopefully we will meet again!!

P.S Pardon me for the grammatical errors, this is the best I could come up with !

Thanks and Regards

Thank you so much, Venky for this wonderful e-mail. You have echoed several of our own thoughts and experiences. Don't worry, you have done much more than "pretty well", and I (and lots of others, I am sure) deeply respect and admire you for that.

Wish you all the very best as you head to the US, and I am confident you will achieve even greater heights there. As you reach the very top of your chosen field, please do not forget the rest of us along the way. :P

Keep in touch! :)
