Why are we having cut off marks ? Why not relative grading ?

The cut-offs are decided based on the distribution of student marks, so it is relative grading. Only prob is we dont know the exact distribution - we can only speculate. I've mailed the prof. If he sends it, I will share it with everyone.

Apparently, the distribution is not Normal. So that (Avg.+1.65 S.d) can't be applied. But, we can go with percentage--grade allocation(5%,15%...) regardless of distribution..rite?

How about making this a S ,A,B Course? The cutoffs could be like
85+ -S
79-85 A
65-79 B
Rest C

Send this to Sir:

Dear Sir,
With due respect I would like to suggest you grading pattern for this course.
The next semester is going to be Placement Semester  for all B.Tech students. The GPA of current semester will be the last GPA being considered for placements. We all will be competing not just with our department, but also with students from other departments and for some companies(ex. Shell) with other Institutes as well. The CGPA plays an extremely important role in entire placement process and during application for higher studies.
We want you to give us grades leniently like it is done for the LAB courses( S,A & B) or Workshop courses. Here is a suggestion on the grading pattern:

S : top 10% students.
A : above 70 marks
B: above 50 marks
C: below 50 marks.

Please consider this suggestion. Please give good grades to everyone. Thank You

I think its a feasible idea to make it an SABC course.. being as realistic - apparently last year it was SABC ( according to the prof ) ..

Make it SABC....No Ds and No Es.
There is no difference between a person getting S or D, as per the course work is concerned.
Because, we all know, we literally did nothing in the course, except copying from a source.

My two cents:- At least 2/3rd of the class should get grades within S, A, and B only, and the rest 1/3rd all C. Getting a D or below in a four-credit 'course' of this, er, 'unique' nature would be unnecessarily harsh.
