Abstract: MIMO wireless uses multiple transmit antennas. Practical systems typically have a power amplifier for each antenna with a specific power limit (i.e., per-antenna power constraint (PAPC)). In presence of antenna selective fading which is commonly encountered, PAPC causes performance loss. A MIMO system with a sum power constraint, suffers less loss. However, sum power constraint can be expensive and has PA poor efficiency.
This talk proposes a Power Combing Network (PCN) to alleviate the loss from PAPC. A PCN can steer power from the PAs assigned to antennas with faded links to antennas with stronger links.
We examine PCN applications to MIMO transmission with and without channel knowledge at the transmitter, and propose fast methods to identifying the appropriate PCN configuration and related parameters.
A PCN using a 2x2 hybrid has been used in WiMAX client devices with good results and will also be discussed.
