“Gulafsha is a 11 year old girl in a village in Rajasthan. Her parents sends her and her younger brother to a local government school which has overcrowded classrooms, no electricity, absent teacher’s record, poor sanitary conditions and very few benches to sit. They don’t see any value in her going to school. For them it’s a waste of time and effort for Gulafsha but not for her brother. Therefore she will be getting married soon, by the age of 12 years, while her brother will continue to study further”
Sapna is a sprightly 13-year-old girl. She is the youngest of her three siblings, loves watching Hindi movies and wearing nail paints and devouring ice lollies. But these days she has hardly any time to indulge in these activities because six days a week, come rain or shine, the diminutive adolescent travels five km from her home in a decrepit illegal colony in Ghaziabad to work as a domestic help.“I never went to school because my parents did not think it was important. I have to earn money for my future and my mother has seen a boy for me,” said Sapna sadly, as she flipped through her brother’s science book.”
Sapna’s story is hardly out of the ordinary.
Like Sapna, there are 113 million of adolescent girls (10-19 years) in India, accounting for nearly 11% of the population and they are a largely invisible population.
There are many such girls in the country, who do not get basic education. And for the very few who are able to attend school, poor facilities and insufficient funds pose a barrier. Infact, a recent study conducted by the Right To Education Forum found that only 5% of government schools complied with all the basic standards for infrastructure set by the forum.
To address such challenges in society, an NGO called “EDUCATE GIRLS” was founded in 2007. Educate Girls is a non-government organization that holistically tackles issues at the root of gender inequality in India’s educational system. They improve the quality of education and school infrastructure by leveraging existing resources and empowering rural communities. They have a management and outreach office in Mumbai and operate in Pali and Jalore, Rajasthan.
I am happy to share that this year, GIVING CHAMPIONSHIP for World of Difference 2013-14 will raise funds for EDUCATE GIRLS. The entire Vodafone family will fundraise for this NGO to support a better future for the girl child and create a larger impact in society.

Let’s contribute to this cause by doing our bit. Participate and raise funds in the various engagement events that will be organized by HR, WOD champions and Engagers. Do reach out to me or CLT for any support that you may need.
Look forward to your active role in this journey.
